FX & Disney+ Latin America To Launch Mexican Version Of “Welcome To Wrexham”
Following the success of Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds teaming up to purchase the Welsh football club Wrexham, which has been documented through the hit FX series “Welcome To Wrexham,” Disney and FX are going to try to replicate the success in Latin America.
Recently, Eva Longoria, who shot to fame in the hit series, “Desperate Housewives”, has joined up with Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds to purchase the Mexico football club, Necaxa.
The trio is now working with FX on a brand new bilingual sports documentary series, currently going by the working title “Bienvenidos a Necaxa.” It will be released on Disney+ in Latin America.
The show’s description says it will follow Necaxa “as they strive to reclaim their place as one of Mexico’s top teams, while their Mexican-American owner Eva Longoria tries to breathe new life into the team by enlisting the help of her high-profile friends, including new co-owners Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds.”
Production on the new show is set to begin soon, just as the new football season begins in Mexico. The new series is executive produced by Eva Longoria, Cris Abrego, Rachelle Mendez, Nick Frenkel, Jackie Cohn, George Dewey, Rob McElhenney, Ryan Reynolds and Alex Fumero. Fumero will serve as the series’ showrunner, which is produced by Hyphenate Media Group, More Better Productions, Maximum Effort Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment.
Roger’s Take: With the success of “Welcome To Wrexham,” I’m not surprised to see some international versions being attempted, but it’s interesting to see that Rob and Ryan are involved as well. This series is bilingual and features well-known stars, so I expect it to be released globally on Disney+ and on Hulu/Hulu On Disney+ in the US as well.
