After multiple cancellations and revivals, “Futurama” is back with a brand new season, continuing the adventures of Fry, Leela and Bender over a thousand years in the future.

In this new season, there is a wide selection of different topics covered, including birthday party games to the death, the secrets of Bender’s ancestral robot village, A.I. friends (and enemies), impossibly cute beanbags, and the true 5 million-year-old story behind the consciousness-altering substance known as coffee.

Disney has provided me with early access to the first six episodes of the new season, which cover a wide selection of different stories, and as you might expect, some are better than others, though I won’t be revealing any spoilers about the new season!

It’s very noticeable how the writers of the show are trying to tackle today’s modern issues like AI, chatbots, and NFTs, which do work on some levels. However, some of the jokes feel like they’ve been stretched out too far, or the writers got a little carried away.

Due to the time it takes to make a show, some of the topics already feel a little outdated or overplayed. This makes me wonder how these episodes are going to date. In a decade’s time, when people are watching these episodes again or for the first time, many of the jokes and topics might become meaningless.

This new season also continues to try to build out all of the side characters, which long-term fans will no doubt love. Plus, there are lots of great cameos here, too, and that’ll certainly make you laugh.   There’s also a great episode that’s themed around a ripoff of “Squid Game”, but it also acts as a great way to give us a little more insight into a young Fry.

With the latest season, it’s also much more noticeable that the creative team are a little more clearer about what works for “Futurama” in today’s world, as the previous season was a little hit and miss on balancing nostalgia for the show and handling modern topics.

Once again, the cast is back and continues to do a fantastic job of bringing these characters to life, but more importantly, having the original cast back feels in keeping with previous seasons.

Overall:  After all of these years, you know what you’re getting with “Futurama”, and this season is just more of the same.  If you love the show, you’ll love this new season.  The new season is full of modern references and jabs at life today, but through a playful take in the future. Though not every joke hits but with so many, you’re bound to enjoy most of them, especially as they can be so random!

Rating: 4 Out Of 5

“Futurama” returns with a brand new episode on Monday, 29th July 2024, with a new episode being released each week.
