Disney has announced that it has renewed the hit adult animated series, “Futurama” for an additional twenty more episodes, which will make up seasons 13 & 14, following the success of the 11th season, which was on Nielsen’s Top 10 Original Series List for six of the weeks during its run.

The show was initially revived in 2022 with a twenty-episode order; the first ten of those episodes have already been released as the 11th season on Hulu in the United States, Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ around the world. Season 12 is expected to debut on Disney’s streaming services in 2024.

The series is created by 20th Television Animation and originally premiered in 1999.  And it quickly gained a faithful following and critical acclaim, including two primetime Emmys for Outstanding Animated Program. Despite its far-future setting, the show is renowned for its satiric commentary on life in the present.

“Futurama” follows Philip J. Fry (Billy West), a New York City pizza delivery boy, who accidentally freezes himself in 1999 and gets defrosted in the year 3000. In this astonishing New New York, he befriends hard-drinking robot Bender (John DiMaggio), and falls in love with cyclops Leela (Katey Sagal). The trio find work at the Planet Express Delivery Company, founded by Fry’s doddering descendant, Professor Hubert Farnsworth. Together with accountant Hermes Conrad, assistant Amy Wong, and alien lobster Dr. John Zoidberg, they embark on thrilling adventures that take them to every corner of the universe.

The show has been cancelled and resurrected on many occasions; following its initial cancellation by Fox, it was brought back by Comedy Central and was cancelled again, until Disney brought it back ten years later following its purchase of 20th Century Fox.

“Futurama” is a key pillar of Hulu’s Animayhem brand, the sub-brand the streamer launched in July, as Hulu remains the premier adult animation destination. The streamer remains the home to all episodes of fan favourites, including Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers, American Dad, and so many others. Hulu has long been the top destination for Adult Animation and Anime, with over 20,000 episodes across both genres available to stream.  The show is also one of the most-watched series on Disney+ worldwide, continuously appearing in the trending chart.

The previous seasons of “Futurama” are available to stream now on Hulu in the United States, Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ around the world.
