Filming on the fifth season of Freeform’s “Good Trouble” has been halted today due to picketing from the Writers Guild Of America.

According to Deadline, the show was being filmed on location in Aqua Dulce, which is north of Los Angeles, but when IATSE and Teamsters refused to cross the picket line, which had started at 4 am, the set closed down at 9:30 am.

The strike was peaceful, and there was lots of support from other WGA sister unions. Multiple drivers created a large line of vehicles, so no teamster trucks crossed the line while the picketing was ongoing.

This is part of the strategy by the WGA to cause as much disruption as possible and to cost the studios more money, to encourage them to negotiate a fairer deal for writers. This has been happening to film shoots across New York and Los Angeles.

Freeform is intending to continue production on the season, which is expected to finish in June, but it’s likely with all of the disruption, this could impact when the new episodes are released, especially if the picketers cause this to happen more regularly.

The Writers Guild Of America started its strike last week, following six weeks of negotiations with Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, Discovery-Warner, NBC Universal, Paramount, and Sony under the umbrella of the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) failed. The Writers Guild of America are labour unions representing writers in motion pictures, television, cable, digital media, and broadcast news. The Guilds negotiate and administer contracts that protect the creative and economic rights of their members; conduct programs, seminars, and events on issues of interest to writers; and present writers’ views to various bodies of government.

“Good Trouble” follows the residents of downtown Los Angeles’ The Coterie as they juggle career, love and friendship and learn that standing up for what you believe in requires making a little noise and getting into trouble. The series stars Cierra Ramirez, Zuri Adele, Sherry Cola, Tommy Martinez, Emma Hunton, Josh Pence, Beau Mirchoff and Bryan Craig.

The previous seasons of “Good Trouble” are available to stream now on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ in many countries internationally.
