Disney has announced that filming has begun on a brand new Spanish original series, “Yo Adicto”, which has been inspired by the popular book of the same name, by Javier Giner.

The series tells the story of how Javier Giner, an audiovisual professional, decides at the age of 30 to enter a detoxification centre voluntarily. Unable to manage his life anguish and the suffering that it causes on himself and others, he has been immersed in a self-destructive spiral of addiction to alcohol, drugs and sex for several years. In the moment of maximum darkness, he will make the decision to ask for professional help, moved by an instinct of desperate survival. Without knowing it, that gesture will change your life by turning you into a new person. The months he spends admitted to a detoxification centre on the outskirts of Barcelona are a journey of personal discovery, from guilt to reconciliation, a painful path to healing and redemption full of incredible characters: his treatment partners, the professionals of the centre, his relatives… “I, addict” is a visceral and exciting story that goes far beyond addiction.

The new series will star Oriol Pla (“Wild Sunflowers”) as Javier Giner. Also starring in the show will be Nora Navas, Ramón Barea, Marina Salas, Itziar Lazkano, Bernabé Fernández, Catalina Sopelana, and the special collaboration of Vicky Luengo and Omar Ayuso, among others.

It is going to be filmed across different locations in Barcelona. The series will have six episodes directed by Javier Giner and Elena Trapé. The executive producers of the project are Aitor Gabilondo, Javier Giner and Laura Rubirola Sala. The script is written by Javier Giner, Aitor Gabilondo, Jorge Gil and Alba Carballal. ‘Yo, adicto’, edited by Planeta, has become one of the literary phenomena of recent years and currently has seven editions.

Javier Giner said in a statement (Translated):

“I never imagined that my most intimate story would become a series of international reach thanks to Disney+ and the help of professionals and people as admired by me as Aitor Gabilondo and Laura Rubirola. I hope and wish that our work opens debates, destigmates the sick and sheds light on the things that happen to us as human beings, but of which we only talk in whispers because they cause us pain and shame. And that, above all, illuminate all those dark corners with a clear message: from the hell of addiction, with help, with work and effort, you can get out.”

Aitor Gabilondo added (Translated):

“I can’t summarize in a single sentence why I wanted to do this series… but I can say that reading Javi Giner’s book I discovered that I am also addicted, even if I haven’t tried drugs. If you don’t know how to manage your emotions and take refuge in substances, at work or in yourself, you may have a problem… I think that Javi telling his story, he is telling that of many and many… and accompanying him in that task is not only an honor, but also an opportunity to understand and to grow.”

Sofía Fábregas, vice president of the original production of Disney+ Spain, also said (Translated):

“At Disney+ we are proud to be part of such a special series as `Yo, adicto´, driven by new authors such as Javier Giner, with a personal and unique voice; and consolidated producers such as Aitor Gabilondo. We believe in fiction as a vehicle to talk about important issues that inspire, make a greater knowledge, and contribute positively to our society. Undoubtedly, it is one of our big bets of the year, and it will reinforce our goal of offering a plural local production in which each viewer can be reflected and find their place on Disney+.”

No Disney+ release date has yet been revealed.
