Disney has announced that the period drama “El Grito De Las Mariposas” aka “The Cry Of The Butterflies” will be coming to Disney+ in Canada on Wednesday, 8th March 2023, which is on the same day that the new series will arrive on Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ in some other countries around the world, including in Spain.

“The Cry of the Butterflies” is set in the Dominican Republic, during Rafael Trujillo’s dictatorship. It is based on the true story of the Mirabal sisters, the dramatized series turns on the friendship between Minerva Mirabal, the Dominican Republic’s first female lawyer, and Arantxa Oyamburu, an aspiring dancer and Spanish immigrant, and how they played a major role in dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo’s fall in 1961.

The story is so important to Dominican people, that every November 25th, on the anniversary of their 1960 execution by Trujillo’s regime, the Dominican Republic celebrates International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

The series was created by Juan Pablo Buscaini and consists of thirteen 50-minute episodes. It stars a cast of talented Spanish and Caribbean talent including Susana Abaitua (“Patria”, “I Know Who You Are”), Sandy Hernández (“On the Block”), Guillermo Toledo (“I’m so Excited”) and Alberto Garcia (“Che”). It has been produced by Gloriamundi Producciones with Madrid-based Tandem Films (“Rosa’s Wedding”) in addition to Mediabyte.
