Earlier this summer at the San Diego Comic-Con, Disney and the BBC announced a brand new “Doctor Who” spinoff called “The War Between The Land And The Sea”, which tells the story of what happens when a fearsome and ancient species emerges from the ocean, dramatically revealing themselves to humanity, an international crisis is triggered. With the entire population at risk, UNIT steps into action as the land and sea wage war.

The upcoming five-episode stars Russell Tovey (“Feud,” “American Horror Story: NYC”) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“Surface,” “Loki”), alongside returning “Doctor Who” cast members Jemma Redgrave (as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart) and Alexander Devrient (as Colonel Ibrahim).

Created by “Doctor Who” showrunner and executive producer Russell T Davies, who wrote the spinoff with executive producer Pete McTighe (“A Discovery of Witches,” “The Pact,” “Doctor Who”), the series features the triumphant return of the Sea Devils, classic “Doctor Who” villains first seen in 1972.

Russell T.Davis took to social media to confirm that filming has now wrapped on the show:

That’s a wrap! THE WAR BETWEEN THE LAND AND THE SEA ends its shoot today after 80 days! Led by this man, the amazing @russelltovey, and @gugumbatharaw. The best cast and crew, thank you all! This show is going to be astonishing

The upcoming original series has been directed by Dylan Holmes Williams, director of two “Doctor Who” season one episodes: “73 Yards” and “Dot and Bubble.”

“The War Between The Land And The Sea” is produced by Bad Wolf, with BBC Studios for Disney Branded Television and BBC. In addition to Davies and McTighe, executive producers include Phil Collinson, Joel Collins, Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter.

The new original series is set to be released in 2025 exclusively on Disney+ in many countries around the world and on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the U.K.

While we wait for “The War Between The Land And The Sea” to arrive, the first season of “Doctor Who”, along with last year’s 60th anniversary and Christmas specials, are also available to stream on Disney+.  A new Christmas special called “Joy To The Worlds” will arrive on Christmas Day, and a second season of “Doctor Who” is coming out in 2025.

Roger’s Take:   2025 is going to be a big test for the future of Disney’s partnership with the BBC, as if these shows don’t pull in enough viewers, I wouldn’t be surprised if the deal comes to a close.  Hopefully, “The War Between The Land And The Sea” will be really good, but its got an uphill battle to convince audiences to check out a “Doctor Who” spin-off.
