20th Television is currently developing multiple new projects that are reviving popular older shows like “Malcolm In The Middle”, “Scrubs”, “Prison Break” and “Buffy The Vampire Slayer”.

According to Deadline, 20th Television and Onyx Collective is also now developing a new revival of the hit show, “Desperate Housewives”, which will be called “Wisteria Lane”.

The show has been described as a fun, sexy, darkly comedic soap/mystery in the vein of “Desperate Housewives”, set among a group of five very different friends and sometimes frenemies who all live on a picture-perfect cul-de-sac called “Wisteria Lane.” On the surface, all the Wisteria neighbours are living the dream: beautiful homes, gorgeous families, shiny SUVS in the driveway. But behind those white-picket fences and smiling Insta posts are secrets.

Natalie Chaidez, who previously worked on the hit HBO series The Flight Attendant, is writing the project. Kerry Washington‘s Simpson Street is creating it. Simpson Street is behind Onyx Collective’s biggest hits, “Reasonable Doubt” and “UnPrisoned,” along with the popular Hulu show “Little Fires Everywhere.”

The original “Desperate Housewives” show has been a hit on streaming services in the years since it finished and followed five women, mostly friends, living on Wisteria Lane, who begin uncovering dark secrets after their neighbour Mary Alice Young kills herself.

There are no plans for any of the original cast to return for the new show, though in the past few years, Eva Longoria, who starred in the original series, has spoken out on many occasions, saying that she would love to return for a new version/revival.

It’s also unclear if the new series will use the original outdoor set, which is still used daily as part of the Universal Studios Tour in Hollywood, though it has been modified for the theme park tourists. The indoor scenes could be filmed anywhere.

Should the “Wisteria Lane” project be created, it’s likely that it will be released on ABC, Hulu, and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.   The previous seasons of “Desperate Housewives” are available to stream on Hulu, and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ in many countries around the world.

Roger’s Take: Disney loves established franchises, and “Desperate Housewives” continues to be a popular show on streaming platforms. Plus, it’s been over a decade since the last episode aired, so it’s been long enough to revive the show with a brand new set of characters and hopefully a few older ones. That would help bridge the gap between generations and pull in many of the older viewers.
