Disney+ Teaming Up With Astro In Malaysia

Disney has been slowly building out its international content offerings with team-ups with local partners to provide Disney+ subscribers with more local content, such as with ITV in the UK and ZDF in Germany.

Today, Disney has announced it is teaming up with Malaysia’s leading content and entertainment provider, Astro, which will bring together world-class content and Malaysian storytelling, extending reach and enabling more audiences across the country to discover both Disney+ and Astro’s content.

The expanded collaboration will see more of Disney+’s world-class movies, series and originals made available across Astro’s platforms, including Astro TV, Astro GO and NJOI, bringing globally loved entertainment to Malaysian audiences in more ways. In turn, a curated slate of Astro’s locally produced content and popular Malaysian shows will be showcased on Disney+, introducing homegrown stories from some of Malaysia’s best storytellers to a wider audience.

Disney+ continues to bring some of the world’s most recognisable entertainment franchises and beloved characters from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, the general entertainment brand Hulu, and more to audiences worldwide, with these global favourites now even more accessible to Malaysians through Astro’s platforms. Customers across Astro and NJOI can enjoy a wider selection of Disney+ movies and series, including blockbuster titles like Pirates of the Caribbean, Kingsman: The Secret Service and The Incredible Hulk, alongside popular favourites such as Maleficent, Brave and Monsters University, as well as hit series like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Scrubs and New Girl.

As Malaysia’s content powerhouse, Astro continues to create original stories that resonate with millions of Malaysians, spanning award-winning kids’ animation, variety shows, signature entertainment programmes and compelling dramas. A growing selection of Malaysian titles will be available on the Disney+ platform across genres including horror, drama, reality, action and kids programming, featuring favourites such as Zombi Kampung Pisang, Polis Evo 1 & 2, Ola Bola, Khun:Sa – Che Khun Che Nisa, Takdir Itu Milik Aku, Syurga Itu Bukan Mudah, Travelawak: Projek Bapak Bapak and Didi & Friends, adding greater variety.

Agnes Rozario, Chief Content Officer, Astro, said in a statement regarding the deal:

“We’re delighted to deepen our relationship with Disney+ as we continue to evolve with changing viewing habits and deliver a more seamless, cross-platform experience. This expanded collaboration brings together Disney+’s globally celebrated stories and Astro’s meaningful local content, creating new opportunities for Malaysian stories such as Didi & Friends, Polis Evo and Travelawak: Projek Bapak Bapak and other Astro original productions to sit alongside Disney’s iconic global entertainment catalogue on Disney+. Ultimately, it offers greater choice, convenience and enjoyment for our customers, making it easier than ever to access the best of global and local storytelling in one connected ecosystem.”

Mark Chan, Vice President and Managing Director for Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Hong Kong, The Walt Disney Company, added:

“At Disney, storytelling has always been at the heart of what we do. Through this collaboration with Astro, we are excited to bring our globally loved stories to even more audiences in Malaysia, while also amplifying the richness of local voices on Disney+. It’s about offering viewers new opportunities to discover compelling storytelling—whether they’re from around the world or right at home.”

Roger’s Take: Disney+ has been trying to beef up the amount of locally made content on its platforms around the world, and I suspect we will see more of these deals in the future.  For subscribers in Malaysia, this will increase the amount of content available, while also offering more opportunities to reach a larger audience.
