Early last year, when Bob Iger returned as CEO following the removal of Bob Chapek, during his first quarterly financial call, it was announced that Disney was working on a new “Zootopia” film.

The first film was released in 2016 and became a huge smash hit, pulling in over a billion dollars at the box office and becoming a streaming juggernaut on Disney+.   There was also a series of “Zootopia” shorts released on Disney+ in 2022 called “Zootopia+”.  Disney has even built a whole-themed land around the movie at Shanghai Disney Resort.

During today’s quarterly financial results call, it was announced that “Zootopia 2” will be released in cinemas for Thanksgiving on 26th November 2025.  Continuing the trend of Disney releasing a new major new theatrical release every Thanksgiving.

The original film is set in the modern mammal metropolis of Zootopia. With habitat neighbourhoods like ritzy Sahara Square and frigid Tundratown, it’s a melting pot where animals from every environment live together—a place where no matter what you are, from the biggest elephant to the smallest shrew, you can be anything. But when optimistic Officer Judy Hopps arrives, she discovers that being the first bunny on a police force of big, tough animals isn’t so easy. Determined to prove herself, she jumps at the opportunity to crack a case, even if it means partnering with fast-talking scam-artist fox Nick Wilde to solve the mystery.

No other details on “Zootopia 2” have been revealed, and it’s unlikely we will hear much more about this project this year since the release date is still almost two years away, so development still has plenty of time to create the movie.

The first “Zootopia” film, along with the short series “Zootopia+”,  are available to stream on Disney+.
