This week, Disney is releasing the first two episodes of a brand new series from Marvel Animation called “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”, which follows Peter Parker on his way to becoming a hero, with a journey unlike we’ve ever seen and a style that celebrates the character’s early comic book roots.

The series was initially revealed as part of Disney+ Day back in 2021, where it was called “Spider-Man: Freshman Year” and the following year at the San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel revealed that the show had been greenlight for a second season, which was going to be called “Spider-Man: Sophomore Year”.

However, after some major changes at the studio, the series was renamed to “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”, and it went through some more creative changes to no longer be going to follow Peter Parker on his way to becoming Spider-Man in the MCU. Instead, it now takes place in a different multiverse, allowing the creative team more flexibility regarding storylines and characters.

During a recent appearance on the Movie Podcast,  Brad Winderbaum, who is an executive producer on the show and also the head of Marvel TV, revealed that the show has been greenlit for a third season on Disney+ and will be meeting the show’s creator, Jeff Trammel soon to hear the pitch.

Brad also confirmed that the scripts for the second season are already done, and the animatics are currently halfway through.

The first two episodes of “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man” are coming to Disney+ on Wednesday, 29th January 2025, and new episodes will be released each week over the next four weeks.

Roger’s Take:  Just ahead of the release of the new series, this news of two more seasons will no doubt help put some fan’s minds at rest that this show will be around for a while and is worthwhile getting invested in.  Ultimately, should the show do poorly in terms of viewership or reaction, plans could change, and Disney could pull the plug. However, animation is generally much cheaper to make than a live-action series and with Marvel wanting to focus on multi-season shows and produce fewer live-action shows for Disney+, it makes sense to lean in a little more on a show like “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man”.
