Disney+ Greenlights New Animated Series “Journey”
Disney has announced details on a brand new original animated series that is currently going by the working title of “Journey”, which has been greenlit for Disney+.
This series tells the story of what happens when the energy shield protecting her city begins to fail, Journey answers a mysterious call that leads her beyond its walls — and into the forbidden lands beyond. In this new world, she uncovers the truth about her father’s disappearance and discovers a powerful magic within herself that may hold the key to saving her people.
The series reflects the division’s continued focus on creating stories filled with magic, wonder, adventure and heart for a new generation of kids and families.
The magical, music-filled series is now in production from Disney Kids & Family and Higher Ground. It is going to be produced by ICON Creative Studio in association with Disney Television Animation, “Journey” (WT) is created by Matt Munn (“Ice Age: Collision Course,” “Spies in Disguise”), who will serve as executive producer alongside Peabody Award-winning Steve Loter (“Marvel’s Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur,” “Kim Possible”). Jessie Dicovitsky is an executive producer for Higher Ground.
Higher Ground’s have previously worked on many beloved family franchises including “Waffles + Mochi” and “Ada Twist, Scientist.”
Ayo Davis, president, Disney Kids & Family said in a statement regarding the new show:
“‘Journey’ is an epic adventure anchored by a remarkable young heroine whose courage inspires those around her. At its core, it’s a story about resilience, self-discovery and the power of believing in something bigger than yourself — the kind of universal themes that have defined Disney stories for generations.”
Jessie Dicovitsky, head of television at Higher Ground, added:
“Combining adventure, imagination and music, ‘Journey’ is a true original that takes bold swings. We’re proud to partner with Disney on this fantastical series and to build on Higher Ground’s history of delivering fun and meaningful stories for kids and families.”
This is the latest series for kids and families that is coming to Disney+, joining an established lineup of beloved series such as “Bluey,” “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse+,” “Marvel’s Spidey and his Amazing Friends,” “Big City Greens” and “Phineas and Ferb.”
Roger’s Take: Disney needs to keep expanding its animated lineup and it desperately needs some new original shows to form new franchises, rather than just being reliant on existing characters. With the addition of magic to the story, it will hopefully find the audience on Disney+ when it launches, though I suspect it might be a while until we see it arrive on our screens.
