Disney+ Dominates The Nielsen 2021 Film Streaming Chart In U.S
Nielsen has revealed the 15th most-watched shows and films on streaming services in 2021 in the United States, with Disney+ dominating the film chart, with 11 of the most-watched 15 films of the year.
Pixar’s “Luca” was the most-watched movie of the year, pulling in over 10.6 billion minutes of viewing, showcasing why Disney’s strategy of not releasing the film in cinemas, worked out perfectly for this title. Pixar’s “Soul” also was a big success in 2021, though it’s important to note that because it was released over Christmas in 2020, the initial launch boost wouldn’t have been counted.
“Raya And The Last Dragon” was also another massive success for Disney+. While it did have a theatrical run and a Disney+ Premier Access release, the film was the third most popular film of the year.
While Disney’s classic films continued to pull in viewers, with “Moana” being the second most-watched film of 2021, which is why Disney is making a new series based on the movie. With both “Frozen” films and “Coco” continuing to pull in an audience, showcasing the power of these films.
Other big Disney releases of the year, “Cruella”, “Black Widow”, and “Jungle Cruise”, all had Disney+ Premier Access releases, plus a quick-release onto Disney+, meant that these films made the top 15 chart.
Marvel’s “WandaVision” was the only Disney+ Original to make the top 15 list on the series front, which Netflix dominated.
Disney’s ABC/20th shows “Criminal Minds”, “New Girl”, “Bones”, and “Grey’s Anatomy” continue to pull in viewers on Netflix. These shows are available on Disney+ internationally.
It’s important to note that Nielsen doesn’t monitor mobile views, nor does it monitor Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video, Apple TV+ and Netflix, but doesn’t count Peacock or HBO Max.
