Disney+ Developing New “Tink” Series
Over the years, Disney has relied heavily on live-action reimaginings of its animated classics to become box office successes, with the likes of “Lilo & Stitch”, “Aladdin” and “The Lion King” making over a billion dollars each at the box office around the world.
Disney also loves the characters from the iconic “Peter Pan” story, with multiple films and shows released over the years, including many animated “Tinker Bell” movies and an animated series featuring “The Lost Boys”, plus a live-action adaptation for Disney+.
Now, according to Deadline, the next project is a live-action television series from 20th Television called “Tink”, which features the small and feisty fairy, Tinker Bell.
Apparently, Disney has been working on a project featuring an updated version of the character for a while, and this is considered a major project for Disney+.
Disney had previously been working on a live-action version of “Tink” in 2015, with Reese Witherspoon set to star in it, but it was retooled in 2021 after Gary Marsh, who was President and Chief Creative Officer at Disney Branded Television, stepped down and set up his own Disney-backed banner.
Gary will be an executive producer on the series, which will be written by Liz Heldens and Bridget Carpenter. The pair previously worked together on “Friday Night Lights”, with Liz currently working on “Will Trent” and previously working with 20th Television on “The Orville” and “The Dropout. Bridget has also worked with Disney on “Only Murders In The Building”.
No other details on this project have been revealed, such as who might star in it, where it will be filmed, or when it’s likely to be released on Disney+.
While we wait, you’ll find the classic “Peter Pan” film, along with the live-action version and the “Tinker Bell” animated films, available to stream on Disney+.
Roger’s Take: Disney+ is in desperate need of some big-budget fantasy series to bring all of the family together for that little spark of Disney magic, and I think “Tink” might be a perfect show to do that. The character is extremely popular and a major part of Disney’s theme parks and cruise ships, so a live-action version will instantly be boosted in visibility. The character also has had enough adventures in other media that there are likely plenty of ideas to keep a show going for multiple seasons and separate from the main “Peter Pan” storyline, while leaning in on the lore of the iconic book.
