Disney Developing “Gaston” Live-Action Film

Disney has had huge success with live-action reimaginations of its classic villains, with “Maleficent” and “Cruella” both box-office hits.

The next villain to get their own stand-alone film will be Gaston, from the iconic animated series, “Beauty And The Beast”. According to Deadline, early development on a new “Gaston” film is currently underway at Disney.

It is being written by Dave Callaham, who has previously worked on “Shang-Chi” and the “Expendables” movies. Kate Herron and Briony Redman had previously been linked to the movie as writers. The new movie will be produced by Michelle Rejwan, who previously worked on the latest Star Wars projects, such as “Andor” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” shows. No director has been linked to the project.

While we’ve already seen Gaston jump onto the big screen in the live-action remake, which was released in 2017 and saw Luke Evans play the role, there was also a spin-off series for Disney+ in development, but that was cancelled at the last minute.

No plot details on the new “Gaston” film have been revealed, but the character will be played by a new actor, with a different take on the character, with some “swashbuckling” tones to it. Apparently, Disney is high on the idea.

As with anything in early development, it doesn’t necessarily mean the film will be made, and it might be a while until we get more details on it, such as who will star in it or when it could be released, either in cinemas or straight to Disney+.

While we wait, both the original animated and live-action versions of this classic story are available on Disney+.

Roger’s Take: After the success of “Cruella” and “Maleficent”, I’m not surprised by the plan to bring “Gaston” is going to get another shot at a prequel, since the Disney+ show could have been a lot of fun.  I also think doing a completely brand new take on the character is probably the best idea, similar to how Emma Stone had her own take on Cruella, rather than it just being a de-aged Glenn Close.
