Disney+ Characters Take Center Stage In Disney Lorcana’s New Set “Reign Of Jafar”
Later this month, Ravensburger is releasing the eighth set of the trading card game, Disney Lorcana, called “Reign Of Jafar”. The game is set in the wondrous realm of Lorcana and lets players take on the role of Illumineers and wield magic ink to summon a team of Disney characters known as glimmers, who appear in both familiar and fantastical ways. The game was designed to be easy to learn for TCG newcomers while still offering strategic depth for experienced players.
Ahead of the new set’s release, Ravensburger has sent me a selection of products from the new set, including a Treasure Trove, Two Single-Player Starter Decks, A Booster Box, a playmat, and the new Palace Heist stand-alone game.
Opening blind packs is one of the thrills of trading card games and the new “Reign Of Jafar” set features artwork from many popular Disney films and shows, which you’ll also find available to stream on Disney+. As you might expect from the title of the eighth set, the “Aladdin” film is represented in mutiple cards, featuring characters like Aladdin, Jasmine, Abu, The Sultan, Palace Guards, Iago and obviously, Jafar.
Another major franchise included in this set is “Lilo & Stitch”, which ties in nicely with the release of the new live-action version in cinemas, as there are multiple cards featuring characters from the film. Though currently the game hasn’t moved into covering live-action characters, though I suspect that will eventually happen as the game expands. One of my favourite cards from this set is a legendary Stitch, which I was extremely happy to pull from a blind pack.
“Reign Of Jafar” also introduces characters from one of the iconic original animated films, “Bambi”, with multiple cards featuring the title character, along with her buddies, Thumper and Flower.
Also represented in the new set are multiple cards from the classic Disney Afternoon cartoon, “Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers”, with cards featuring, both Chip and Dale, along with Gadget, Zipper and Monterey Jack. As one of my favourite cartoon shows, I couldn’t resist the urge to get the new playmat featuring some artwork from a previous set of the show. The play mat gives you a safe area on a table to either play the game or organise your cards, reducing the chance of damaging the cards and also making your play area personalised to you.
The new “Reign Of Jafar” set includes artwork from so many classic Disney films, that you’ll find on Disney+, including:
- The Lion King
- Big Hero Six
- The Rescuers
- Ducktales
- Encanto
- Lady And The Tramp
- Wreck-It Ralph
- Pinocchio
- Princess And The Frog
- The Emperor’s New Groove
- Frozen
- The Sword In The Stone
- Bolt
- 101 Dalmatians
- Hercules
- Mulan
- Basil The Great Mouse Detective
- Tangled
- Treasure Planet
- Moana
- Beauty And The Beast
- Alice In Wonderland
- Peter Pan
- Robin Hood
- Raya and the Last Dragon
- Zootopia
- Bolt
- Along with the classic characters like Mickey, Minnie, Pluto and Donald.
Generally, with each new set, the designers introduce a couple of new franchises into the game, expanding out the number of shows and films, all of which are available on Disney+.
This new Palace Heist game is a unique product. It offers a self-contained game that can be played by yourself or with a friend. This gives players who maybe want to get some experience at the game a way of playing without the pressure of going to a local game store or playing friends/family in a more traditional card game.
It’s also packaged more like a traditional board game, where you can buy this product alone and won’t need anything else. One of the things I really like about it, is that it offers a single-player experience, so even if nobody else in your household wants to play, you can get to grips with some of the new cards.
The Single-Player Decks , as you might expect, are a great place for any beginner to start, should they want to play the game, since it has a full deck of 60 cards, plus a bonus blind pack for some extra fun. These pre-constructed decks will give players a balanced way of playing the game, with some synergy between the cards, which can eventually be upgraded with other cards from the game.
The Illumineer’s Trove is one of the best products in each set. It offers eight blind packs of cards, a unique lore counter, and dice that make playing the game more fun. The actual box is very useful for storing cards, and there are also some card dividers to make storage easier. These boxes are usually a must-have for any collector.
The “Reign Of Jafar” Lorcana set will arrive in local game stores from May 30th 2025, with many stores putting on special pre-release events, where players take part in a special draft event, which is a unique way of playing the game without the restrictions of colours, as each player is provided six packs of the game to make a deck. These are always great fun to attend and offer players a different gaming experience due to the lack of traditional boundaries, plus everyone is using brand new cards for the first time, rather than their tried and tested decks. The set will then get a general release at all retailers the following week on June 6th 2025.
