“Critical Incident” Coming Soon To Hulu & Hulu On Disney+
Earlier this year, Australian streaming service Stan released a brand-new original series called “Critical Incident”, which delves into the complex world of policing; this contemporary crime drama is inspired by creator Sarah Bassiuoni’s real-life experiences working as a lawyer in Western Sydney’s juvenile justice system.
While on patrol for a teenage suspect, Senior Constable Zilficar ‘Zil’ Ahmed (Khanna) pursues Dalia (Boe), and in the chaos and confusion of the pursuit, a bystander is critically injured. Zil’s world comes crashing down when he discovers Dalia was in fact not the perpetrator. The immense guilt over the bystander’s injuries, coupled with the pressure of the critical incident investigation and the public scrutiny, creates an unbearable burden for Zil. Encouraged by his brothers in blue, Zil becomes obsessed with pinning something on Dalia.
Disney has acquired the United States rights to the Australian series, “Critical Incident”, which will be released on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ later this year.
The gripping psychological crime thriller was created by Matchbox Pictures and distributed by All3Media International, which they’ve also announced the show has also been acquired by New Zealand on TVNZ.
Akshay Khanna (Polite Society, The Doll Factory) leads an exceptional cast, including Zoë Boe (The Tree, Total Control), Roxie Mohebbi (Shortland Street), Hunter Page-Lochard (The Newsreader), Jai Waetford (Neighbours), Jackson Heywood (Stan Original Series Bloom) and Zindzi Okenyo (Stan Original Series Wolf Like Me), with Simone Kessell (Yellowjackets) and Erik Thomson (Stan Original Series Black Snow).
“Critical Incident” is directed by Neil Sharma (Heartbreak High) and Daniel Nettheim (Stan Original Series The Tourist, Line of Duty), created and written by Sarah Bassiuoni alongside writers Ruth Underwood, Hannah Fitzpatrick and Natasha Henry, and produced by Bree-Anne Sykes with Executive Producers Sheila Jayadev and Debbie Lee for Matchbox Pictures, and Cailah Scobie and Amanda Duthie for Stan.
Jennifer Askin, SVP North America at All3Media International said in a statement:
“In Critical Incident, Matchbox Pictures and creator Sarah Bassiuoni have delivered an authentic, nuanced portrayal of the realities of policing and criminality in the suburbs of a major city. While Zil and Dalia’s story unfolds in the distinctive setting of Western Sydney, it depicts complexities and consequences of policing and being policed that are highly relevant around the world. Brought to screen by an acclaimed creative team, and with outstanding performances from a cast of new and established talent, this is a powerful and provocative drama that will enthral audiences, and we’re very pleased to start its international journey.”
Major production investment from Screen Australia and Stan. Financed with support from Screen NSW. International sales by All3Media International. Post, digital and visual effects supported by Screen NSW. Developed with the assistance of Screen Australia.
Roger’s Take: Disney has been picking up a number of international shows for Hulu and Disney+ in the US, showcasing their new approach to focusing less on creating more international originals, instead, saving money by just acquiring the US rights.
