Earlier this summer at the San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios revealed that Robert Downey Jr would be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but with a multiverse twist. Instead of returning as Iron Man, he will be playing the role of Doctor Victor Von Doom.

But he won’t be the only big name returning to our screens, as it’s been revealed by the movie’s directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, that Chris Evans will be returning.

It’s unclear if Chris Evans will be returning as Steve Rogers, aka Captain America, since the last time his character appeared on our screens was in the final moments of “Avengers: Endgame”, where he went back in time and stayed with Peggy Carter while passing the iconic shield to Sam Wilson.

Following “Avengers: Endgame”, the Captain America storyline continued with the Disney+ series, “The Falcon And The Winter Soldier”, which saw Sam Wilson take up the mantle of Captain America, which will be explored in the next Marvel theatrical release, “Captain America: Brave New World” next February.

Most recently, in a multiverse adventure, Chris Evans returned to Marvel to reprise the role of Johnny Storm, aka The Human Torch, in “Deadpool & Wolverine”. He previously starred as the character in two “Fantastic Four” movies, prior to the launch of the MCU.

It’s also expected that Anthony Mackie is going to be returning as Sam Wilson in “Avengers: Doomsday”, so this could be a chance to see two Captain America’s in action, leading up to the events of “Avengers: Secret Wars”, which will see the Multiverse saga come to a close.

“Avengers: Doomsday” is coming to cinemas on May 1st, 2026, with “Avengers: Secret Wars” following the next year on May 2027.

Roger’s Take:  I’m not surprised to hear that Chris Evans is returning for the next “Avengers” movie, especially once he came back for “Deadpool & Wolverine”, since the next two “Avengers” movies are set to deal with the Multiverse situation, wrapping everything up and moving forward, this could be a good time to either reset the character with a new actor, pass the torch to Sam Wilson or reestablish Chris in the role for a while longer.   No doubt playing the same role for years could be frustrating for an actor, but with over seven years between “Endgame” and “Doomsday”, hopefully, it has given Chris time to enjoy filming other movies and to have a break, long enough to miss it.
