The BBC has announced that it has acquired all three seasons of the American teen comedy-drama “Love, Victor” from Disney, which will all be coming soon to BBC Three and BBC iPlayer.  The show has previously been released as a Star Original on Disney+ in the UK and Ireland.

“Love, Victor” focuses on a new student at Creekwood High School, Victor (Michael Cimino). The series follows his journey of self-discovery: facing challenges at home and struggling with his sexual orientation. He reaches out to Simon (played by Nick Robinson, star of the original Love, Simon film) when it seems too difficult for him to navigate his way through high school.

Sue Deeks, Head of BBC Programme Acquisition, said in a statement:

“Love, Victor is a heartfelt, funny and nuanced coming-of-age story, beautifully portrayed by a winning and relatable cast.”

The show stars Michael Cimino (Never Have I Ever), Rachel Hilson (Red, White & Royal Blue), Anthony Turpel (The Bold and The Beautiful), Bebe Wood (The New Normal), Mason Gooding (Scream VI), Ana Ortiz (Ugly Betty). Created by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, Love, Victor is inspired by and set in the same world as the 2018 film Love, Simon.

“Love, Victor” is produced by Temple Hill Entertainment, No Helmet Productions, The Walk-Up Company and 20th Television.

This deal continues a recent trend by Disney to license out its content to third parties. Most recently, Disney licensed out over ten shows, including “Abbott Elementary” to Channel 4.   Licensing these shows out brings in extra revenue for Disney and allows a show to reach a larger audience.   As with other recently licensed out shows, it’s likely that this will be a non-exclusive deal, so the series should remain on Disney+.    The BBC and Disney have a long-standing business relationship, with many shows and films from Disney broadcast on the BBC channels and its iPlayer streaming service.
