Disney’s 20th Century Studios is developing an adaptation of the Daniel Kraus novel “Whalefall”, which tells the story of a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an 80-foot, 60-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. After giving up on life, the young man is surprised to find a reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places.

The upcoming film is going to be directed by Brian Duffield, who has been working on the script with Daniel Kraus. Brian has previously worked on the hit Hulu/Disney+ movie, “No One Will Save You”.

Deadline is reporting that after an extensive auditioning process, Austin Abrams is going to be playing the lead role in the movie. Austin has previously starred in Apple TV+’s “Wolfs”, HBO’s hit series, “Euphoria” and Netflix’s “Do Revenge”.

20th Century Studios was able to secure the distribution rights to the film last year in a competitve auction, with auditions taking place over the past few weeks.

Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody and Allan Mandelbaum are producing “Whalefall”, along with Brian Duffield.
Richard Abate and Will Rowbotham of 3 Arts Entertainment will exec produce with J.R. Young overseeing for the studio.

No release date for the film has been revealed; it’s likely it will be released in cinemas first, before heading straight to Disney+ and Hulu.
