Disney is looking to expand its international original content division as it’s been revealed that Jon Wax is going to become the EVP of international Original Television for Disney Entertainment.

Jon Wax has previously run the genre development division at Amazon and was behind “Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power” and “The Boys” spinoff, “Gen V”.

In this brand new role, Jon Wax will be working with regional leaders and their teams around the world to develop local content for Disney+, but it will not be a centralised group overseeing the international teams. Disney has had lots of success with its international originals, with shows like “Moving”, “Extraordinary” and “The Artful Dodger”.

Before working with Amazon, Jon Wax previously worked at WGN America/Tribune Studios, where he oversaw shows such as “Underground”, “Outsiders” and “Manhattan”. And Jon has previously also worked with 20th Century Television, working on major hits such as “24”, “Bones” and “Prison Break”.

Wax had been at Amazon for around four years, having previously led the drama and movies division for YouTube Originals. Before that, he was EVP of original programming at WGN America/Tribune Studios, where he oversaw series including Underground, Outsiders and Manhattan. He began his career at Fox working on shows such as 24, Bones and Prison Break and serving as VP of Drama Development at Twentieth Century Fox Television.

In a statement, Jon Wax said:

“From Moving and The Boss to the upcoming Renegade Nell, Disney has an impressive international content portfolio. I’m thrilled to be joining the team and for the opportunity to work with the outstanding regional groups — supporting their efforts to make industry-leading original programming for subscribers.”

He will work alongside Kristen Finney, Disney Entertainment’s EVP of International Television Strategy & Operations.  Jon will be working in Los Angeles, where he will report to Eric Schrier, president of Disney Television Studios and Global Original Television Strategy for Disney Entertainment, who added:

“At Disney Entertainment, our regional teams have done an incredible job building an exceptional slate of locally produced content that has fueled the growth of our streaming platforms. Jon’s vast experience and unique perspective will serve us well as we continue to elevate our global content strategy with impactful shows that resonate with customers around the world.”
