Disney Acquires “Divine Rivals” Film Rights

As Disney continues its search for the next big thing, its live-action division has acquired the rights to Rebecca Ross’s fantasy romance book, “Divine Rivals”.

The first book in the “Letters of Enchantment’ series was released in 2023 and tells the story of what happens when two young rival journalists find love through a magical connection; they must face the depths of hell in a war among gods to seal their fate forever.

After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again. But eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow just wants to hold her family together. Her mother is suffering from addiction, and her brother is missing from the front lines. Her best bet is to win the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.

To combat her worries, Iris writes letters to her brother and slips them beneath her wardrobe door, where they vanish- into the hands of Roman Kitt, her cold and handsome rival at the paper. When he anonymously writes Iris back, the two of them forge a connection that will follow Iris all the way to the front lines of battle: for her brother, the fate of mankind, and love.

After its initial release, the book sold over a million copies and became very popular in the online BookTok community. The sequel, “Ruthless Vows”, is also a bestseller, with over half a million copies sold.

According to Deadline, Disney picked up the rights to the franchise after an existing deal with Paramount expired, and a brand new screenwriter is being brought in to work on the film, replacing Sofia Alvarez, who was writing it for Paramount; however, the project’s original producers, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Pouya Shahbazian, will remain involved. The book’s author, Rebecca Ross, will be an executive producer along with Stephen Shafer. Disney SVP of Production Allison Erlikhman is overseeing the project.

With the film still in early development, no other details, such as who might be starring in it, when it might get released or who will be making it.
