Live-Action “Robin Hood” Disney+ Original Movie Not Moving Forward

Disney has had some massive box office success with live-action adaptations of its classic animated films such as “Lilo & Stitch”, “Beauty & The Beast” and “The Lion King”.

Back in 2020, it was revealed that Disney was developing a live-action adaptation of the 1970’s classic, “Robin Hood” for Disney+.

The original film told the story of what happened a long time ago, in a faraway land. Legend tells an extraordinary tale of courage and friendship. Get ready for a swashbuckling adventure, unforgettable characters, memorable music, and lots of laughs in Disney’s Robin Hood. Heroic Robin Hood — along with his trusted companion Little John and his devoted band of merry men— conjures up one famously funny and daring deed after another to outfox greedy Prince John and bring happiness to the residents of Sherwood Forest.

The live-action version was going to be a mix of live-action and CGI, similar to how “The Lion King” remake was made and was going to be written by Kari Granlund, who also worked on the Disney+ Original film, “Lady and the Tramp”.

During a recent Reddit AMA, Carlos López Estrada revealed that Disney is no longer moving forward with this new version, stating:

“It’s dead, sadly. I say ‘sadly’ because I actually thought there was something really special (and original!) there. Some truly extraordinary music we had figured out for it.  I keep daydreaming about doing it independently with different characters.”

The original 1970s animated film is available to stream on Disney+.

Roger’s Take:    This shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, as there haven’t been any updates on this project in over five years; it’s likely been dead for a while, especially as Disney has been refocusing its efforts on theatrical releases rather than Disney+ Original films.

While we’ve seen Disney pulling back on how many live-action adaptations it’s making, as it’s had some box office backfires, such as “Snow White” and “Dumbo”, but it’s also had some incredible success, resulting in them being much more picky about what projects are actually happening.

What do you think of Disney cancelling a “Robin Hood” remake?  Let me know on social media!
