The Muppet Show | Disney+ Original Review

The Muppets are back for a brand new special on Disney+ that brings together all of the characters you love, with Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Fozzie and others.

After many years of Disney trying to find a successful and suitable format to keep these iconic characters on our screens, Disney has gone back to what worked decades ago, “The Muppet Show”.

The gang is all back at the original Muppet Theatre and putting on a show for its fans, with Sabrina Carpenter as the main special guest.  Sabrina has a couple of musical numbers, mixing together popular, new and classic songs, including a duet with Kermit and a performance of one of her own songs.

There are also special appearances by Maya Rudolph and Seth Rogen, who is also executive producing the special, though these should be seen more as a bonus, as it’s clear Sabrina is the main guest star of this show.

This special is around thirty minutes long, and honestly, that feels about right, as while I enjoy the chaos of the Muppets, keeping their exposure short is the key to keeping these characters fresh and fun to watch. Sabrina Carpenter is the perfect choice for the guest star, as her more edgy attitude and style play nicely into the Muppet’s traditional style.

The return of “The Muppet Show”, especially to primetime ABC, is probably one of Disney’s biggest pushes in recent years to bring the franchise back.  Disney has attempted a number of Disney+ specials and shows, but I do think this specific project feels much more important.

No doubt, there will be lots of fans of the Muppets picking up on how Kermit doesn’t sound right, and while I didn’t think it was too jarring, I’m not gonna lie and say I didn’t notice that it just didn’t sit right.  No doubt some of the early backlash to the special’s trailer will highlight this to the creative team for future shows.

It’ll be interesting to see how this special does, as I think many fans are going to get that feeling of nostalgia, while also making some changes to appeal to a younger audience, who haven’t yet fallen in love with these adorable characters.

My biggest complaint about the show is how I think the trailer gave away too many of the best jokes in advance, but there is still plenty to keep you laughing throughout.

Overall:  “The Muppet Show” is a fun, cheesy, easy-going comedy that Muppet fans are going to enjoy.  It’s got all the classic jokes in there, many of them also aimed at adults, which is a nice touch.   It’s not trying to reinvent the wheel; it’s going back to its roots, and I think that’s a good thing.  I’d love to see “The Muppet Show” return a couple of times a year for holiday specials, but I’d be worried that anything more than that could wear out its novelty.    However, for this special, I enjoyed watching it, had plenty of laughs and have since spent the rest of the day humming the Muppet theme.

Rating:  4 Out Of 5
