Disney+ Subscription Price Rise Coming Soon To The UK

As with almost everything at the moment, the price of a Disney+ subscription in the United Kingdom is set to increase soon, as Disney has announced that the annual subscription cost in the UK will rise later this month.  There will also be a similar price rise taking place across Europe.

Unfortunately, Disney hasn’t yet confirmed what the new price of a Disney+ subscription will be.  However, they have now got a promotion advert on the Disney+ home page stating that it’s the last chance for people to lock in an annual subscription of the Standard tier for the price of £89.90 for a year.  As of September 30th, the price will increase by 10% to £99.90.

Currently, there are three different tiers available for Disney+, with the non-ad-supported tiers offering both a monthly and annual option.  Here are the current prices:

  • Standard With Ads – £4.99
  • Standard – £8.99 / £89.90
  • Premium – £12.99  / £129.90

Disney hasn’t yet officially confirmed the new prices for all of the different tiers that will take effect at the end of September.

With the Standard annual subscription going up 10%, it’s likely that annual Premium tier will also go up around the same rate, possibly pushing it up to over £140.

Most of the other streaming services are also doing annual price rises, so Disney+ isn’t unique in its annual price rise, but it will no doubt sting for many people, having to pay out more money each month, for the same content.

If the new price rise does make you question your Disney+ subscription, there are some options, such as downgrading a tier, e.g., Premium to Standard, or opting for the cheaper ad-supported tier.   Other options would be to see if any of your internet, telephone or banking providers offer a Disney+ subscription as a bonus.

Alternatively, cancelling a Disney+ subscription and rotating through different services every few months, or whenever there is a promotion on, catching up and bingeing whole seasons of shows.  This can reduce the number of concurrent platforms you are subscribed to at any one time.

We will likely see price rises in other regions around the world in the coming months, as this has been the pattern in previous years.  Although Disney may change its strategy in the US as it prepares to merge Hulu and Disney+, it may put off the price rise until then.

Disney+ has started offering more live sports and continues to offer new original programming from its studios like Marvel, Star Wars and 20th Century Studios, but no doubt this price rise will alienate more audiences to potentially unsubscribe.

If you are currently an annual subscriber, you won’t see a price rise until your annual subscription runs out, so anyone signing up in September, will lock in that price until this time next year, but if you’re on a monthly subscription plan, those generally start the following month after a price rise.  So it may be worth considering an annual subscription for those not on the ad-supported tier.

It’s likely we will receive official details on the price rise soon, and no doubt there will be a negative response to it, as these annual price rises are really starting to make it unaffordable to have multiple streaming platform subscriptions at once.  Especially with an ad-free Premium tier likely set to cost twice what it did when Disney+ initially launched in 2020.
