Disney+ Original “The Mysterious Benedict Society” Returning To Streaming

One of the many original shows to be released on Disney+ during its initial launch period was “The Mysterious Benedict Society,” which was based on the award-winning and bestselling book series by Trenton Lee Stewart.

The show told the story of a group of orphans who are placed undercover at a boarding school known as The Institute and must foil a nefarious plot with global ramifications while creating a new sort of family along the way.

The first season was released on Disney+ in 2021, and the second season arrived the following year.  However, in 2023, Disney was tasked with drastically reducing the overheads of its streaming service business and pulled over one hundred original titles from Disney+ and Hulu, as a way of writing off almost $2 billion of assets from the platform.

Many original films, such as “Stargirl” and “Crater”, were removed from Disney+, though these were later put up on digital platforms to purchase.  Original shows, including “Willow”, “Big Shot”, “The Mighty Ducks: Game Changes”, and “Pistol”, were removed from Disney+ and haven’t been made available on any other streaming platform.

However, this might change, as a brand-new family-focused streaming platform called “The Wonder Project” is set to launch on October 5, 2025, exclusively on Prime Video in the United States.   A subscription will cost $8.99 per month or $89.99 per year.

The Wonder Project on Prime Video will offer audiences more than 125 licensed titles and over 1,000 hours of hand-picked films and TV series across multiple genres, embodying the company’s mission to entertain the world with courageous stories, inspire hope, and restore faith in things worth believing in.  The streaming service will offer content from studios such as Banijay Entertainment, BBC Studios, Disney, Lionsgate, NBCUniversal and Sony Pictures.

One of the projects from Disney that will be available on the Wonder Project includes “The Mysterious Benedict Society”, which will mark the first time it’s been available to viewers legally for years.   Other Disney owned titles coming to this new streaming service include “The Sandlot” and “The Sound Of Music”.

Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten, CEO of Wonder Project, said in a statement regarding the launch of this new streaming service:

“As a mom, I’m always looking for great films and TV series to watch with the kids. I’m always asking friends for recommendations — and so are they. Starting October 5 we can lean on Wonder to recommend great new shows. With this launch we’re expanding our mission, to include curating stories for our audience that restore faith in things worth believing in. We love that our brand can entertain and inspire through programming we create, and through stories told by others that we curate.”

“The Mysterious Benedict Society” stars Tony Hale, Kristen Schaal, Ryan Hurst, MaameYaa Boafo, Gia Sandhu, Seth Carr, Emmy DeOliveira, Mystic Inscho and Marta Kessler. The series was executive produced by Sonar Entertainment, 20th Television, Jamie Tarses, Karen Kehela Sherwood, Deepak Nayar, James Bobin, Matt Manfredi (writer/creator) and Phil Hay (writer/creator).  The showrunners for the show were Darren Swimmer and Todd Slavkin.

Roger’s Take: It’s great to see Disney has found a way to re-release some of its great original programming that was “deleted” from Disney+ to help them save billions of dollars.  “The Mysterious Benedict Society” was one of my favourite shows from the “deleted” titles, and I’m glad more families are going to get the opportunity to see it, or rewatch it.

Disney has been entering into more licensing agreements with other streaming platforms, particularly non-exclusive deals, to boost its revenue and ensure the profitability of its streaming division.

This deal also opens up the door to the possibility of other former Disney+ Original shows potentially returning by being licensed to another streaming service.  It was rumoured that due to the way the assets were written off, these shows can’t return to Disney+ for years due to a clause in the contract about not returning during the initial licensing period, so it’s possible that “The Mysterious Benedict Society” could return to Disney+ in the future, but it’s likely going to be year away if it does.
