Disney’s 20th Century Studios has won an auction to acquire the distribution rights to a new film from Imagine Entertainment called Whalefall. The film is based on the recently published novel by bestseller Daniel Kraus, who has previously written the Searchlight Pictures film, “The Shape Of Water”.

According to Deadline, Brian Duffield will co-write and direct the new film. He previously worked with 20th Century Studios on the sci-fi thrillers “No One Will Save You” and “Underwater.”

Imagine Entertainment picked up the movie rights last summer to the book, which is about a scuba diver in search of his deceased father’s remains who gets swallowed by an eighty-foot, sixty-ton sperm whale and has only one hour to escape before his oxygen runs out. After giving up on life, the young man is surprised to find a reason to live in the most dangerous and unlikely of places.

The book’s author, Daniel Kraus, will also be co-writing the script for the film and will produce the movie with Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, and Allan Mandelbaum to produce for Imagine Entertainment. Executive producers include Richard Abate and Will Rowbotham of 3 Arts Entertainment. J.R. Young will be overseeing the project for 20th Century Studios.

No release details have been announced regarding when the movie will be released in cinemas before eventually coming to Disney’s streaming service.
