Disney’s purchase of 21st Century Fox is due to be completed on the 20th of March 2019 and this has been causing some issues for the last remaining X-Men themed movies, Dark Phoenix and The Last Mutants.

X-Men: Dark Phoenix is due to be released in cinemas on June 7th but according to a lengthy article over on Vanity Fair reporter Nicole Sperling, the movie is suffering from the effects of Disney’s takeover because the marketing campaign isn’t running as usual because so many members of the team aren’t there or have been replaced with temporary staff.  Many of these staff aren’t expecting to still be working for Fox when the movie is released.

“We know when we are dropping a trailer, but we are nowhere near where we should be at this time.  It’s frightening. I would be mad if I were a filmmaker.”

And this could be a major reason why The New Mutants won’t be heading to cinemas as during this same article, future of the New Mutants, which was rumored to be heading to Hulu or Disney+ recently, was also mentioned:

“Other, smaller films initially slated to be part of Fox’s theatrical-release calendar are likely to be shuttled to Disney’s new streaming service, which is set to launch in late 2019.  One likely casualty, observers guess, will be Josh Boone’s Marvel spin-off, The New Mutants, starring Game of Thrones heroine Maisie Williams.  Its moderate budget, younger cast, and smaller spectacle make it the perfect title to send directly to consumers. It’s a proposition filmmakers all over town need to start getting used to.”

The New Mutants has already been been delayed twice and is due to hit cinemas in August 2019, but with a changing landscape of how movies are distributed and consumed, Disney purchasing Fox does give them more production space to create shows and films.

With reports that the movie has been toned down from its initial “horror” genre and proposed re-shoots not taking place, it does seem that this movie has been put on the back-burner once it was announced Disney would be taking over 21st Century Fox.

Do you think The New Mutants will be coming to Disney+?
