Following on from the huge success of the first Deadpool movie, Fox had begun production on a new animated series based on the foul mouthed Marvel character. However the series never got going due to a disagreement with the creators and frustration from Donald Glover.

Recently Deadpool’s co-creator Rob Liefeld spoke to Nerdist News, about the possibility of a Deadpool cartoon still happening.

When that went south [the Glover cancellation], that was very unfortunate for all. But I will not say who, but a Marvel executive did say: ‘Don’t worry Robert, we’re going to give you a Deadpool cartoon. It’s still going to happen.’

With Disney’s purchase of Fox due to complete later this month, many of the issues for this new series will removed, since Disney will have full control over the character.  Since it was revealed by a Fox executive John Landgraf, told Variety that it was Marvel behind not going ahead with the original project:

“No. I think that Marvel will revive it, because they have the rights. They own the IP and they have the rights to do an animated adult series based on any of the X-Men characters, and based on Deadpool specifically. They didn’t want to do the show that Donald and Stephen [Glover] wrote. We would have done show that Donald and Stephen wrote, but it wasn’t our decision. When Marvel decided not to do that show, we parted company with them as did Donald and Stephen. Now it’s totally up to them [Marvel] whether they hire someone else to do a different show.”

A Deadpool animated series on Disney+ could be a popular addition, either as a more traditional children’s cartoon or as a more edgier version, such as Fox’s other animated shows like Family Guy or Futurama.

Deadpool has already previously appeared in some Marvel cartoon’s such as the Ultimate Spider-Man series, so Disney has been happy in the past to show the character to a younger audience.  And following the huge success of the toned down “Once Upon A Deadpool” in cinemas last month, the chances of a new Deadpool cartoon are higher.

So while Deadpool might seem more naturally at home on a more adult oriented platform like Hulu, toning it down for a general audience would no doubt be a huge hit, but it would be a balancing act to keep fans happy.

Do you think a Deadpool animated series should come to Disney+?
