“Moana” Live-Action Remake Disney+ Release Date Announced
Disney has announced that the live-action adaptation of “Moana” will be coming to Disney+ later this month following its theatrical release over the summer.
In Disney’s live-action reimagining of the beloved animated adventure, Moana (Catherine Lagaʻaia) answers the Ocean’s call and, for the first time, voyages beyond the reef of her island of Motunui with the infamous demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) on an unforgettable journey to restore prosperity to her people.
The movie will be heading to Disney+ on Wednesday 21st October 2026, just over one hundred days after its initial theatrical release in July and its digital release last month.
The film is directed by Emmy and Tony Award winner Thomas Kail (“Hamilton”); produced by Dwayne Johnson, p.g.a., Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda; and executive produced by Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth, Kail and Auliʻi Cravalho.
Building on the enduring popularity of the original animated film, the most-watched movie of all time on Disney+ with over 1.5 billion hours streamed globally, the new live-action reimagining invites families to reconnect with the beloved friendships, music, and spirit they know and love as they set sail on an exciting new journey. From classics like “How Far I’ll Go” and “I Am Moana” to the new song “Along The Way,” enjoy the perfect movie night and sing along to “Moana” with the entire family.
“Moana” features original songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi and Mark Mancina, and an original score composed by Mancina.
The movie had a disappointing box office run over the summer months, pulling in just $323 million globally, but hopefully the film will get a boost in interest with its Disney+ release in time for the holiday season.
