“Good American Family” Returning For A Second Season

Last year, 20th Television released a brand-new original series called “Good American Family” on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ around the world.

Told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma, this compelling drama is inspired by the disturbing stories surrounding a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism. But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. As they defend their family from the daughter they’ve grown to believe is a threat, she fights her own battle to confront her past and what her future holds, in a showdown that ultimately plays out in the tabloids and the courtroom.

The series was a huge hit for Disney, pulling in 140M hours streamed globally on Hulu and Disney+.

This success has led to Hulu giving the show an order for a second season, which will result in the show becoming an anthology, where each season will follow a completely different story, similar to shows like “American Crime Story” or “Fargo”.

According to Deadline, in the second season, it will tell the story of Lorena Bobbitt and John Bobbit, a Virginia couple who incited a media circus that treated trauma as entertainment, launched a thousand dirty jokes and ignited a gender war.

Back in 1993, Lorena cut off John’s penis and drove around with it before throwing it out and calling the police. Her explanation for this was that she was triggered by systemic abuse — psychological, physical and sexual.

This new season will once again be created, written and executive produced by Katie Robbins and executive producer Ellen Pompeo. Though Ellen won’t be starring in the lead role like in the first season. Also set to executive produce are Laura Holstein, Sarah Sutherland and Andrew Stearn. Lorena Bobbitt is consulting on the show, likely giving her side of the story.

It’s unclear when production will start on the show, nor who will star in it, but expect to see it once again released on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+ in the United States and on Disney+ around the world.

Roger’s Take: Turning “Good American Family” into an anthology series is a unique take and a great way of telling different stories, especially those that have caught the attention of the public. I really enjoyed the first season of “Good American Family” and I do remember the situation with the Bobbitt’s becoming a “meme” type story at the time, where it became the butt of people’s jokes, so it’ll be good to actually learn about what happened.
