Scarlett Johansson In Talks To Star In Disney’s “Tangled” Live-Action Remake
Disney has had lots of box office success with its live-action reimaginations of its classic animated movies, such as “Beauty And The Beast”, “The Lion King”, “Aladdin” and most recently, “Lilo & Stitch”.
Over the past few years, reports have surfaced that Disney had been in the early stages of developing a live-action version of “Tangled” for years, but the project was put on hold in April following the massive failure of “Snow White”.
However, following the success of the live-action remake of “Lilo & Stitch,” which remains the biggest Hollywood film at the box office this year, the project is now back in development.
“Tangled” is a reimagining of the classic fairy tale and tells the story of Rapunzel, an innocent, young girl, is locked up by her overly protective mother. Her wish to escape into the world outside finally comes true when she meets the good-hearted thief, Flynn.
The original animated “Tangled” film was released in 2010 and pulled in over $600 million at the box office. It was so successful that the character has become a major staple of Disney’s theme parks and cruise ships.
The new film is going to be directed by Michael Gracey, who previously worked on the hit 20th Century Studios film, “The Greatest Showman”, and the screenplay has been written by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.
According to Deadline, Scarlett Johansson is in talks to star in the live-action version to play the role of Mother Gothel.
Scarlett has previously worked with Disney on numerous projects, including multiple Marvel films, where she portrayed Black Widow, as well as the live-action version of “The Jungle Book” and the award-winning Searchlight Pictures film, “JoJo Rabbit”.
It’s important to note that Disney hasn’t officially announced the “Tangled” remake, and it might still not necessarily happen.
The animated film “Tangled” and its spin-off animated series are available to stream on Disney+.
Roger’s Take: While I think Scarlett Johansson could be an interesting take on Mother Gothel, hopefully, she does it a lot better than Gal Gadot in “Snow White”. Personally, I think Disney should just park any plans to do live-action remakes for years, as they’ve oversaturated the market with too many of these in recent years.
