Hulu Orders “Foster Dade” Pilot
Hulu has ordered a pilot for a brand new mystery YA drama called “Foster Dade”, which is based on Nash Jenkins’ debut novel “Foster Dade Explores the Cosmos”.
The show will be set in 2008 and the present day. It has been described as a sophisticated mystery set at an East Coast boarding school that explores privilege, scandal, sexuality, and masculinity amid the rise of social media, millennial anxiety and pharmaceuticals.
The pilot is being developed by “You” co-creator Greg Berlanti and Bash Doran (Life After Life). It is being created by Warner Bros. Television, where Greg’s company, Berlanti Productions, is under an overall deal.
Greg will also be an executive producer, along with Sarah Schechter and Leigh London Redman, alongside Bash Doran, Nash Jenkins, Robbie Rogers and Donald De Line of De Line Pictures.
Hulu picked up the rights for the spec script back in April and has been fast-tracking it for a pilot order.
Nash Jenkins also took to social media to confirm the news and said:
In the ten years Foster Dade spent living in my head, I’d sometimes find myself imagining what it would look like on the screen. I knew that indulging those sorts of fantasies didn’t make them any more plausible — when I ran cross-country in high school I’d push myself to beat my mile time by fantasizing about getting an acceptance letter from Yale, and we all know how that turned out — and when I started writing in earnest, I came to figure that what I was trying to create was too unwieldy, too overwrought, too awkwardly visceral to translate to anything other than my prose.
But sometimes the universe surprises you. Sometimes there are people like @gberlanti and @sarahsowitty, who end up reading your words and knowing them better than you do, who have the brilliance and generosity to make them into something a million times more radiant than you thought possible.
This is just so insanely cool. Thank you to Greg and Bash and Sarah and Donald (and my dear old pledgemaster @alecmeach) and to my agents Will and Sloan and Julie, who are the only reason something as awesome as this gets to happen to little old me.
I don’t know if this caption is cogent because I’m just sitting here sort of vibrating in the happiest shock I’ve ever felt. Wow.
As with other pilots, it doesn’t necessarily automatically mean that we will get to see the show make it to our screens, as many pilots don’t get picked up for full series or the show goes through a drastic creative shift following the making of the pilot.
Since this pilot has been ordered by Hulu, should it get greenlit for a full series, expect to see it released on Hulu and Hulu On Disney+. Internationally, since Warner Bros. Television is making the show, Disney might not have the global distribution rights for the project for Disney+, so we will need to wait for further confirmation on this project.
