Disney’s “Zenimation” has returned with a brand new season, consisting of 8 new episodes with various themes, including Rain, Natural Wonders, Transformation and many more. It doesn’t have any music, it doesn’t have any story, as the whole idea of these shorts is just to relax and listen to the background sounds. If you’ve ever watched an ASMR (autonomous sensory meridian response) video on YouTube, then this is for you.
Each short features a wide range of scenes from the huge collection of films created by Walt Disney Animation Studios, including major films like “The Lion King”, “Bambi”, “Lilo & Stitch”, “Frozen” and the most recent release “Raya and the Last Dragon”.
The animation is superb, since it’s just a collection of many of the greatest animation films ever. The quality of the audio is top-notch, perfectly catching every little sound, like an insect’s wings, the sound of rustling paper and much more.
Disney has also released a video where all of the shorts have been edited together into one longer video, making it much easier to relax when you pop this video on for a longer relation period. I’m glad they released this simultaneously as the rest of the shorts, as Disney didn’t do this for the first season, and it was rather distracting having to keep going back into the menu to pick the next short.
I only have one real complaint about “Zenimation”, and that’s the black borders throughout the short keep changing since the films were all filmed in different ratios, which have changed over the decades. While I understand why they vary and we have huge black borders around some of the scenes, it does tend to jump around so much, it’s a little distracting.
This is a very different style of video format for Disney, it’s not for everyone, and I myself didn’t find it relaxing. I do however often listen to soft Disney instrumental music in the background while video editing, as it helps me focus. I tried using “Zenimation” for the same reason, and I didn’t find it helped. But if you like listening to background noise to help you relax, you should give this a try.
It’s not for everyone, but “Zenimation” is a unique and creative idea that has a target audience. It’s not for me, but I can at least see why people will enjoy it, and it’s very well edited together. So give it a whirl; you’ll either love it or think it’s odd and turn it off!
