While production has been paused on many shows and movies due to the Coronavirus, its been confirmed that work on the Disney+ Original Marvel Studios animated series, What If, is continuing.

In an interview with Newsarama, the show’s head of animation Stephan Franck said:

“I normally split my day between my home studio and the Disney lot for dailies and reviews, but now we’re just doing it all remotely.  From what I hear across town, animation has been able to keep the shows in production with everyone safely working from home. Kudos to the studios for pivoting so fast to remote work.”

He went onto add:

“It all happened literally within days. Unfortunately I’m also hearing about some projects in development or with more distant release dates being put on hiatus, but a fair number of people in animation are still at work from the safety of their home, which we are all grateful for.”

When asked about the upcoming series, Stephan Franck wouldn’t give any further details:

“I really can’t tell you much about the show, or S.H.I.E.L.D. agents are going to come and take me away,” he said. “What I can tell you is that the level of talent and passion on the team is off the charts and that I am having a blast.”

Disney recently brought in Canadian animation company, Squeeze, to work on 5 out of the 10 episodes of the series, which is due to arrive on Disney+ in 2021.

This new animated series will explore pivotal moments from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it will turn it on its head, leading the audience into uncharted territory. Including Winter Soldier taking on a zombie Captain America, Black Panther becoming Starlord, Agent Carter getting the super soldier serum.

With production on so many shows and movies currently suspended, its good news to hear work on the animation series can continue.
