When Disney purchased Lucasfilm back in 2012, it not only brought Star Wars, it also obtained the character, Indiana Jones.   Since then, they’ve built a new Indiana Jones themed bar at their Disney Springs resort in Walt Disney World and started work on a fifth movie, which is currently expected to be released in 2021.

Indiana Jones has been part of Disney for a while, with attractions being built at it’s theme parks around the world, but the back catalog might not be heading to Disney’s new streaming service, Disney+.

This is because on January 1st 2019, Netflix will add four Indiana Jones movies to its streaming service, including:

  • Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
  • Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
  • Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark
  • Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom

The reason for this is because, while Disney owns the character, Paramount Pictures still holds the distribution rights to the four movies and the TV show.

So the unfortunately Indiana Jones doesn’t look like it will be a major part of Disney+ for the foreseeable future.   However Disney could still do a deal with Paramount Pictures, either to purchase the back catalog or license those movies and shows to Disney+, once the current deal with Netflix runs out.

Disney did purchased the rights for all new content from Paramount Pictures back in 2013, though Paramount will still get a percentage of profits from future movies.  So any new Disney made Indiana Jones movies, would head to Disney+.
