Lately, several people in our Facebook Group and on social media have been confused by a recent email or popup message within Disney+ informing them of a price increase ahead of their renewal going through.

Especially those Disney+ users who signed up when Disney+ launched two years ago in the United States, Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand and Australia.  Or those who signed up for Disney+ when it launched across the UK and Europe in March 2020.

The actual price rise was announced back in December 2020 at Disney’s Investor Day. The main reason for this was that Disney was spending much more money on original programming, including “Star Wars” and “Marvel” shows.

Disney+ in the United States also received a price rise, going up by $1 a month, to $7.99 a month.  And the annual price is now $79.99.

This price rise went into effect on March 26th 2021.  So any renewals are set at the new price.

While, internationally, the main reason for this price rise was the addition of Star, which added hundreds of new films and thousands of new TV episodes.  There would also be new originals like “Vacation Friends”, “Only Murders In The Building”, and “Y: The Last Man”.

So the price for Disney+ as of February 23rd, 2021, was set to:

  • Canada: $11.99/month or $119.99/annual
  • Australia: $11.99/month or $119.99/annual
  • New Zealand: $12.99/month or $129.99/annual
  • UK: £7.99/month or £79.90/annual
  • Euro: 8.99/month or 89.90/annual
  • Norway: 89.00kr/month or 890.00kr/annual
  • Denmark: 79.00kr/month or 790.00kr/annual
  • Sweden: 89.00 kr/month or 890.00 kr/annual
  • Switzerland: CHF12.90/month or CHF129.00/annual
  • Singapore: $11.98/month or $119.98/annual

From February 23rd 2021, all new customers from that date have paid this new price.

However, Disney announced that it would honour the 2020 price until 23rd August 2021, for any annual or monthly renewals up until this date.

  • Active monthly subscribers, all payments made on or after 23rf August will reflect the new monthly price. Monthly subscribers can choose to switch to an annual subscription at the current price at any time before 23rd August.
  • Active annual subscribers, if your subscription renews on or after 23rf August, you will be charged the new annual price.

This is why anyone renewing since August 23rd has had to pay the new 2021 price.

Again, this Disney+ price rise was announced in December 2020 and has been in effect since February 2021. Disney hasn’t suddenly pushed up the price of a subscription.  But for that extra money, you’ve now got access to a Disney+ library, almost twice the size as it was before the introduction of Star.  Had Star not been added, there still would have been an increase, similar to what subscribers in the United States have to pay, to cover the cost of all the new originals being created.
