Earlier this year at Disney’s Investor Day event, an image was shown highlighting all the different devices that Disney+ would be available on, including Amazon Fire Stick, Roku, Chromecast, Apple TV and others.

However since then, Disney has confirmed Disney+ will be on many of these devices at launch, but hasn’t officially confirmed it on Amazon devices.  Amazon is the second largest supplier of streaming media boxes in the US, with 29% of the market, just behind Roku.

We are asked dozens of times a day about Disney+ being available on Amazon Fire sticks and tablets, but now, according to the Wall Street Journal, Amazon and Disney reportedly are locked in a standoff over the advertising inventory within Disney apps on Amazon’s Fire TV platform.

This is because Amazon wants to sell a “substantial percentage” of the available ad space on Disney streaming apps including Disney+, but Disney won’t agree to these terms.  Amazon usually want 40% of the ad inventory from programmers, but can be pushed down to 20%.  Disney are reportedly only offering 10%.

The deal isn’t just effecting Disney+, as Disney apps could also be removed from Fire TV, the second-largest distributor of streaming TV apps including ABC, ESPN and Disney Channel. Disney believes that since it has so many popular apps, it gives them substantial clout.  And they want to give up any ad inventory to Amazon.

Roku currently uses a different system for subscription-oriented services, as they pay Roku a one-time “bounty” when people sign up for the service through a Roku app or pay on a recurring basis. Currently Hulu gives Roku about 15% of the subscription revenue from customers who signed up for the service through Roku.

This is similar to how Disney deals with cable companies, as offering a percentage of consumers’ monthly cable fees, while the cable providers often get access to a portion of the commercial time on the networks.  And these cable negotiations often can get heated, resulting in channels being removed.

Talks are still on going, especially as neither company wants to lose potential earnings, but it looks like Disney is holding out and won’t agree to Amazon’s terms.  This news could also follow a similar situation to the recent Spider-Man Sony deal, where it went public before they agreed on a new contract.   There apparently isn’t a deadline for the talks to conclude, but Disney+ is set to launch in the US on November 12th.

Hopefully this deal is sorted soon, so Amazon Fire users can watch Disney+.

I pre-ordered Disney+ for three years and this development REALLY annoys me. I ONLY use Amazon Fire devices; so if Disney+ is not going to support Fire TV at launch I am going to cancel my subscription. Also I don't understand why I would be viewing adds in a service I have to pay for! Ute

The Ads are more in relation to their other apps, Disney has dozens of different apps/games with ads... its not just about Disney+ :-( I agree it sucks they've not sorted this out yet.

This is very disappointing. I have a fire TV and I prepaid for Disney+ I already replaced my fire tablet because of the limitations. I hope I don't need a new TV. Disney will always win over fire TV for me.

    3. Gary Nelms November 5, 2019

I agree. I have three tvs. Two with Fire sticks and one with Tivo. Oh the two who Disney is shutting out. I too pre-registered for three years. Totally disappointed.

I have Samsung, LG, 2 Fire sticks and one Roku device. I preordered Disney + but if Disney can not find a way onto these devices that aren’t Roku then I will not be paying for Disney +.

  4. Lisa October 5, 2019

I have both a Roku and a Fire Stick but I’d prefer to watch on my Fire Stick. So I hope they sort that out.

I went cordless, and bought a TV antenna. I then bought a Fire Recast so I could record over the air TV. I have Fire Sticks on all my TV’s. I have to much invested with Amazon to switch to another service. I’m highly disappointed that Disney and Amazon can’t work out a deal. I will have to stay with Amazon and Netflix. I have been disappointed with Netflix and wanted to switch to Disney and bundle with Hulu and ESPN. This will not be happening if the two companies are unable to work out a deal. Most of my family and friends have Fire Stick, and have told me they will simply have to keep Netflix over Disney. Very disappointed.

I can’t believe I have to beg to spend $ when it comes to Disney and amazon 2 of the largest US corporations in the world! How dumb can you be???? Haven’t you ever heard of meeting in the middle. I am sure this can happen tomorrow if the powers that be wanted it to. For now I will stand pat with my firetv and wait.

  10. Ryan October 26, 2019

I have a Amazon Firestick 4K and already pre subscribed for Disney+ I would be so pissed off if I had to go out and purchase a new Roku 4K device just to have my Disney

  11. Jocelyn October 28, 2019

We stream with a Firestick and have no plans on changing anything. This is so annoying. I was ready to prepay yesterday, I'm glad I waited and did my research. I hope they work this out bc we're ready to subscribe. Just need the green light that these billion dollar corporations are done being greedy and actually care about what their customers (the ones who are paying) want... not what they want! So infuriating!

  12. Lynn October 28, 2019

I have an Amazon fire stick & I love disney. If I could afford a new tv that has roku on it, I would get it. Amazon needs to get their head out of their ass & make a deal with Disney. If Disney wanted to, they could buy Amazon & cut out the corporate tight asses.

  13. Lee Underwood November 1, 2019

I prepaid for Disney + (3 year deal $150.00) since I had seen the picture showing the amazon firestick as a streaming device. We are huge marvel fans, so we were very excited. Now I find out we can't stream through our firesticks. Very upset!

If I cannot get Disney+ on Amazone Fire, I will replace then with something else....

  17. TRACEE A. HANNA November 3, 2019

I am not really concerned, as I learned when the Youtube app was outdated on Fire for a while, I can get the Disney+ channel by logging on with Amazon Silk-web browser. I could not use Youtube app anymore for quite some time however once I logged in on the web app there was no difference. In the end Amazon updated the Youtube app and I was able to use it again without a problem. No matter what they decide to do, there are always options.

  18. Kim November 4, 2019

We have an amazon fire stick in our living room. That’s where we would be watching Disney+ with the kids. Now I don’t know what to do... $70 bucks isn’t worth watching the the channel in my room on the PlayStation, the kids aren’t allowed in here. I hope they get this figured out in the next two weeks. So far waste of money for me if I can’t use fire stick.

  19. Leslie November 5, 2019

I bought a fire stick so that I would be able to watch Disney+ on my tv. Finding out it isn't available is very disappointing. I don't want to only have a tablet or phone being my only option.

  20. Livi November 6, 2019

Can’t you just download the Disney plus app on your phone and stream it to the fire stick?

  21. Katy April 1, 2020

I'm sorry to say. But if Disney Plus does not get back on my amazon firestick soon. Then i will have to give it up. I am not paying for another streaming service just to watch Disney Plus.

    1. Roger Palmer April 1, 2020

It is available on Amazon Fire devices now.. This article is from October

  22. Janice October 16, 2020

Yup fire stick user. Disney plus works on chrome book and roku. Figured it might be a fight between the two. Would be nice if they were honest and let end users know so we wouldn't endlessly install, uninstall, clear cache, clear data, and on and on. Argggg
