Pixar’s next big release is “Lightyear”, which is the upcoming sci-fi action-adventure, that is the definitive origin story of Buzz Lightyear, the hero who inspired the toy, “Lightyear” follows the legendary Space Ranger after he’s marooned on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth alongside his commander and their crew. As Buzz tries to find a way back home through space and time, he’s joined by a group of ambitious recruits and his charming robot companion cat, Sox. Complicating matters and threatening the mission is the arrival of Zurg, an imposing presence with an army of ruthless robots and a mysterious agenda.

The film features the voices of Chris Evans as accomplished Space Ranger Buzz Lightyear, Uzo Aduba as his commander and best friend Alisha Hawthorne and Peter Sohn as Sox. Keke Palmer, Taika Waititi and Dale Soules lend their voices to the Junior Zap Patrol’s Izzy Hawthorne, Mo Morrison and Darby Steel, respectively, and James Brolin can be heard as the enigmatic Zurg. The voice cast also includes Mary McDonald-Lewis as onboard computer I.V.A.N., Isiah Whitlock Jr. as Commander Burnside, Efren Ramirez as Airman Diaz, and Keira Hairston as Young Izzy. Directed by Angus MacLane (co-director “Finding Dory”), produced by Galyn Susman (“Toy Story That Time Forgot”) and featuring a score by award-winning composer Michael Giacchino (“The Batman,” “Up”),


When Is “Lightyear” Released In Cinemas?

Lightyear” is being released exclusively in cinemas on June 17th 2022, before being released on Disney+ and home video at a later date.


When Will “Lightyear” Be On Disney+?

Unlike the last three Pixar films, “Turning Red”, “Soul”, and “Luca”, “Lightyear” is heading to cinemas first, and currently, Disney hasn’t announced how quickly the film will be available Disney+.  Disney likes to keep its cards close to its chest and see how the film performs at the box office, before announcing a Disney+ release date.

Should “Lightyear” follow “Encanto” with a 30-day theatrical release window, then “Lightyear” could be available on Disney+ around Wednesday 21st July 2022.  But it’s much more likely that Disney will go with a 45-day theatrical release window, like it has done for “Doctor Strange In The Multiverse Of Madness, meaning that “Lightyear” could drop onto Disney+ around Wednesday, 3rd August 2022.

UPDATE: Disney has confirmed the film will arrive on Disney+ on Wednesday 3rd August 2022.


Is “Lightyear” Coming To Disney+ Premier Access?

Disney has confirmed that following the release of “Jungle Cruise”, it won’t be using Disney+ Premier Access, instead offering selected movies exclusively in cinemas first.


What Time Will “Lightyear” Be Released On Disney+

When the “Lightyear” does get added to Disney+, the streaming service updates daily at the following times:

  • Pacific Time: 00:00 AM / Midnight
  • Eastern Time: 03:00 AM
  • UK: 08:00 AM
  • Sydney, Australia – 19:00 PM

Sometimes content can arrive a few minutes later as the servers update. The Disney+ front page usually updates about an hour later.


Is “Lightyear” Going To Be Added To Netflix or HBO Max?

“Lightyear” is created by Pixar, and Disney doesn’t license out its new films to other streaming services.  So it won’t be available on any other streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, Amazon or Hulu.
