20th Century Studios latest summer blockbuster is “Free Guy”, which stars Ryan Reynolds as a bank teller who discovers he is actually a background player in an open-world video game, decides to become the hero of his own story…one he rewrites himself. Now in a world where there are no limits, he is determined to be the guy who saves his world his way…before it is too late.”
The film was released in cinemas on Friday 13th August 2021, with a 45-day theatre exclusivity.
When will “Free Guy” come to Disney+?
When it comes to answering this question, it will depend on your location.
Currently, Disney hasn’t officially announced when “Free Guy” will be available on Disney+.
In the United States, since “Free Guy” is rated PG13, the film is considered family-friendly and so could be added to Disney+. However, due to pre-existing contracts signed before the Walt Disney Company purchased 20th Century Fox, “Free Guy” must go to HBO Max for its Pay 1 window. Meaning it’s going to be at least 18 months until it’s possible to be added, and there are also many other contracts still active, which could delay its release. Eventually, these contracts will expire and “Free Guy” can come to Disney+.
Internationally things are very different. With the addition of the general entertainment brand, Star, all films released by Walt Disney Studios, including those by 20th Century Studios and Searchlight, are released on Disney+.
While there are some pre-existing streaming contracts in place, there aren’t as many, and some, such as in the U.K., aren’t exclusive. So this means we could we “Free Guy” added to Disney+ in some countries as soon as the 45-day theatre exclusive window is up, which is around the end of September 2021.
Though Disney might try releasing the film through other digital platforms for purchase and rentals, before adding it to Disney+. Ultimately, as with almost everything lately, Disney is experimenting with its release system, to see what will work best for them and consumers.
Is “Free Guy” available on Disney+ Premier Access?
Because of pre-existing contracts made before Disney purchased 20th Century Fox, the film can’t be released on Disney+ Premier Access in the United States, and also, Disney signed a 45-day exclusive contract with cinema chains earlier this year for the film, meaning they can’t use the hybrid release of cinemas and Disney+ Premier Access.
