The first episode of Marvel Studios’ “The Falcon and The Winter Soldier” is coming to Disney+ later this week and will see “The Falcon” and  “The Winter Soldier” team up on a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience.

While the upcoming Disney+ series isn’t directly tied to a story from a Marvel comic book, the new series does pull inspiration from the comic books.   Following the release of “WandaVision”, Marvel saw a huge spike in interest in fans (including myself) buying graphic novels and reading comics on Marvel Unlimited of the “Scarlet Witch and Vision”.

So I asked my What’s On Disney Plus Podcast co-host Jame for some suggestions of what to read before the series arrives on Disney+,

Here are his suggestions:

All-New Captain America (2014) #1

This is it! The all-new, Spy-Fi, highflying adventures of Sam Wilson Captain America and Nomad begin here! – Hydra is growing, the terrorist band have has infiltrated the Marvel Universe completely! But what is their ultimate goal? – United by Hydra, Cap’s rogue’s gallery gathers to take down the new untested Captain America and Nomad!   This series sees Falcon become Captain America

Captain America: Sam Wilson (2015) #1

When Steve Rogers was restored to his natural age, he chose one of his closest and most trusted allies to take up his shield. Now Sam Wilson, formerly the Avenger known as Falcon, carries on the fight for liberty and justice as the all-new, all-different Captain America!  This series sees Sam Wilson fully embrace the role of becoming Captain America.

What better way to introduce a hero clad in the American flag during World War II than by showing him decking Hitler? Simple and effective, we have Joe Simon and Jack Kirby to thank for this one.   This is Bucky Barnes first-ever appearance.

Captain America (2005)

The questions plaguing Captain America’s dreams and memories have been answered in the most brutal way possible. And in the wake of this brutality, General Lukin makes his first all-out assault!  In this volume, we see the debut of “The Winter Soldier”

Falcon And The Winter Soldier (2020)

An office of dead government agents. A gifted new killer. Two ex-Captain Americas. When a dramatic attempt on the life of Bucky Barnes reunites him with Sam Wilson, the two old friends are plunged headlong into a race to uncover the new leader of Hydra before a mass casualty event announces the terror group’s resurgence to the world. The clock is ticking.   This is the most modern comic book series featuring the two heroes together.

With Captain America away, the Red Skull will play. Captain America is stranded on Exile Island with the Red Skull’s murderous minions, while the red-faced devil ruins his reputation with the world. Will the Red Skull finally win?  This comic sees Falcon make his Marvel debut.

 Captain America & the Falcon (2004) #1

Tales of Suspense (1959) #75

Also the debut of vile villain Batroc the Leaper! In Sharon’s first ever issue, she is a mysterious woman who strongly resembles someone from Steve Rogers’ past. What is the mysterious parcel that “Agent 13” is safeguarding, and what happens if she loses it to the enemy?  This is Sharon Carter’s debut in the comics.

These comics are available to purchase now directly from Marvel or as part of the Marvel Unlimited subscription service, which offers thousands of comic books as part of a subscription service.

Will you be checking out any of these comic books ahead of the release of the new Disney+ series?
