Every so often, I’ll be ranking my Top 10 movies in a certain category available on Disney Plus. First, we’re going to start with sports movies. Without further adieu, here’s my Top 10 sports movies currently on Disney Plus.

10. “Alley Cat Strike!”

This Disney Channel Original Movie focuses on bowling, its importance to a group of friends and how these kids teach the star athlete who has been doing things by himself how to be a part of a team. Bonus points for featuring a very young Kaley Cuoco.

9. “The Greatest Game Ever Played”

This film is based on the true story of Frances Ouimet as he fought against class prejudice to become the first amateur golfer to win the US Open back in 1913. In my opinion, this film features the greatest acting performance of Shia LaBeouf’s career.

8. “Johnny Tsunami”

A theme in the Disney Channel Original Movies is a focus on sports that don’t get as many movies here in the US. This one is no different as it focuses on a surfer who moves to a cold climate and takes up snowboarding. The Disney Channel stars were out for this film, including Kirsten Storms from “Zenon: Girl of the 21st Century” and Lee Thompson Young from “The Famous Jett Jackson.”

7. “Invincible”

Based on a true story, Philadelphia native Vince Papale enters an open tryout and earns a spot on the roster of his hometown Philadelphia Eagles. Mark Wahlberg stars as Papale and, in my opinion, perfectly captures his working class struggle and his shock at actually making an NFL team.

6. “Iron Will”

A young man, whose father died in a dog sledding accident, enters an international dog sled race to help make payments on the family farm and to pay for college. Through the race, he overcomes his fear of water and earns the respect of his fellow racers.

5. “Brink!”

“Brink!” tells the story of a teen who tries to balance his love of skating with his responsibilities to his family. It, like “Johnny Tsunami” and “Alley Cats Strike!”, is a nostalgic throwback for anyone who grew up watching original movies on Disney Channel.

4. “Cool Runnings”

The story of the Jamaican bobsled team’s journey to the 1988 Winter Olympics. A typical fish out of water story, the team goes from outcasts to equals over the course of 3 days that includes a bad crash in their final race; with Disney using actual footage from the real life crash to illustrate how violent it was.

3. “Glory Road”

The story of the 1966 Texas Western college basketball team’s run to a national championship. The team features 7 African American players in a time when the best team in the country, Kentucky, only has white players on the team. In the championship game, it’s a battle of old school versus new school as Texas Western faces off with Kentucky for the title.

2. “Remember the Titans”

The story of a high school football team in Virginia forced to racially integrate in 1971. The players battle each other almost as much as their opponents, until they come together as teammates, friends and brothers. Plus, this has one of my the best speeches in any sports movie when Will Patton delivers the “Not Another Yard” speech.

1. “Miracle”

In the words of Al Michaels, it was a “sliver of the Cold War” played out on a sheet of ice. It’s the story of the 1980 US Olympic hockey team and its amazing upset of the Soviet Union. This film features an amazing performance by Kurt Russell as Coach Herb Brooks. And the filmmakers made an excellent decision in teaching hockey players how to act rather than try to teach actors how to play hockey.

That’s my list. It features some amazing variety in sports. It also features many films based on true stories, although all of the films take some creative liberties with the story.

What do you think of my list? What movies are in your Top 10?
