With 2021 now behind us, I wanted to take a look at what was the most popular series globally on Disney+ throughout 2021. This information is based on data, which is tracked daily on the trending list and takes into consideration how popular a show is and how long it has been popular on Disney+. This means that shows released earlier in the year will tend to perform better than the most recent releases.

Marvel shows dominated 2021, with 5 brand new series arriving onto Disney+ and they make up a huge portion of this trending chart.  “The Mandalorian” also continued to be popular with new subscribers checking out the series.

Some of the most popular series on Disney+ in 2021 were some classics for younger audiences, with both “Bluey” and “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse” offering multiple episodes for young binge viewers.

Many of the more established series continue to be a huge draw internationally on Disney+, with mature shows from Star such as “Grey’s Anatomy” consistently being some of the most viewed shows on the platform.

Here are the most popular series on Disney+ globally in 2021:

(Note – Titles availability does vary between countries)

1) The Simpsons

This classic animated sitcom is one of the most popular series on Disney+. It’s set in Springfield, the average American town, the show focuses on the antics and everyday adventures of the Simpson family; Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and Maggie, as well as a virtual cast of thousands. Since the beginning, the series has been a pop culture icon, attracting hundreds of celebrities to guest star. The show has also made name for itself in its fearless satirical take on politics, media and American life in general. There are 33 seasons of this long-running show, with over 700 episodes, making it the perfect binge show to watch on Disney+, plus new episodes from the latest season are dropping weekly in some countries like Canada and Australia, which help keep this series high in the trending chart.

2) Mickey Mouse Clubhouse

The story follows Mickey and Donald as they embark on a trip through a fairytale wonderland in search of Daisy’s cuckoo bird, with their journey bringing them face to face with such figures as Goofy Hatter, Queen Clarabelle, and Tweedle Chip and Tweedle Dale. This title is one of the most popular series on Disney+ and is constantly trending in the US every day.

3) Bluey

Bluey follows the adventures of a lovable and inexhaustible six-year-old Blue Heeler puppy who lives with her dad, mum and four-year-old little sister, Bingo. In every episode, Bluey uses her limitless Blue Heeler energy to play elaborate games that unfold in unpredictable and hilarious ways.

4) Jessie

This Disney Channel live-action series brings an idealistic teen from rural Texas embarks on the adventure of a lifetime when she decides to leave behind starry nights for big city lights. Thrilled to be on her own and determined not to be intimidated by New York City, she accepts a job as nanny for a high-profile couple with four kids. Helping to keep her moral compass in check are Bertram, the family’s butler, and Tony, the building’s 20-year-old doorman.  The popularity of a memes and Tiktok challenges kept young audiences checking out this series throughout the year.

5) Loki

Marvel Studios’ “Loki” features the God of Mischief as he steps out of his brother’s shadow in a new Disney+ series that takes place after the events of “Avengers: Endgame.” Tom Hiddleston returns as the title character, joined by Owen Wilson, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Sophia Di Martino, Wunmi Mosaku and Richard E. Grant. This was the biggest new release of the summer and has continued to pull in viewers since its debut in June.

6) Star Wars: The Mandalorian

This is, without doubt, one of the biggest draws for most people subscribing to Disney+ right now. The show is set after the fall of the Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. It follows the travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far from the authority of the New Republic. Both seasons 1 and 2 are available for fans to enjoy. If you enjoyed this show, also check out the making of series, “Disney Gallery: The Mandalorian”.  And now the first episode of the spin-off series, “The Book Of Boba Fett” is available on Disney+ now.

7) WandaVision

Marvel Studios “WandaVision,” is a blend of classic television and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in which Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and Vision (Paul Bettany) – two super-powered beings living idealized suburban lives – begin to suspect that everything is not as it seems.   This is one of the most unique Marvel shows out there, plus many of these episodes have some amazing cliffhanger endings, that saw huge audiences coming back week after week to check out the first Marvel Studios series.

8) Marvel’s What If?

“What If…?” flips the script on the MCU, reimagining famous events from the films in unexpected ways. Marvel Studios’ first animated series focuses on different heroes from the MCU, featuring a voice cast that includes a host of stars who reprise their roles.

9) Grey’s Anatomy

Follows the personal and professional lives of a group of doctors at Seattle’s Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. This is one of the longest-running shows from ABC and is continuously a top trending show on Disney+ in many countries, especially with new episodes from season 18 being released weekly in some countries.

10) The Falcon And The Winter Soldier

This all-new series arrived on Disney+ in March and stars Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson aka The Falcon, and Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier. The pair, who came together in the final moments of “Avengers: Endgame,” team up on a global adventure that tests their abilities—and their patience, as we see Sam’s journey to becoming the new Captain America.

I think it's legitimately impressive that Grey's Anatomy cracked the top 10 (outranking an MCU series in the process) despite only being available outside of America.
