Each month, we take a look at what are the most popular movie globally on Disney+, which is tracked daily on the trending list and takes into consideration how popular a show is and how long it has been popular on Disney+.
Many of the biggest Disney franchises continue to pull in an audience, especially as younger viewers tend to watch their favourite films over and over.
It’s also worth noting that some films aren’t available in all countries, especially as many countries have Star, which offers more mature films.
Here are the most popular films around the world on Disney+ in August 2021:
Set in a beautiful seaside town on the Italian Riviera, the original animated feature is a coming-of-age story about one young boy experiencing an unforgettable summer filled with gelato, pasta and endless scooter rides. Luca shares these adventures with his newfound best friend, but all the fun is threatened by a deeply-held secret: he is a sea monster from another world just below the water’s surface.
Estella is a young and clever grifter who’s determined to make a name for herself in the fashion world. She soon meets a pair of thieves who appreciate her appetite for mischief, and together they build a life for themselves on the streets of London. However, when Estella befriends fashion legend Baroness von Hellman, she embraces her wicked side to become the raucous and revenge-bent Cruella. This movie was only available on Disney+ Premier Access for most of the month, but with the film becoming available to everyone on Disney+, it saw a huge spike in views in August.
3) Raya And The Last Dragon
Raya, a warrior, sets out to track down Sisu, a dragon, who transferred all her powers into a magical gem that is now scattered all over the kingdom of Kumandra, dividing its people. This film had previously been available on Disney+ Premier Access, but was made available to all subscribers in early June, which is why it has scored higher in the chart, since the longer films are in the trending list, the higher they appear in this chart.
4) Black Widow – Premier Access
Natasha Romanoff, also known as Black Widow, confronts the darker parts of her ledger when a dangerous conspiracy with ties to her past arises. Pursued by a force that will stop at nothing to bring her down, Natasha must deal with her history as a spy and the broken relationships left in her wake long before she became an Avenger. Considering this film is available on Disney+ Premier Access, it shows how many people watched it during August. Especially as “Jungle Cruise” didn’t make the list.
Joe Gardner is a middle school teacher with a love for jazz music. After a successful gig at the Half Note Club, he suddenly gets into an accident that separates his soul from his body and is transported to the You Seminar, a center in which souls develop and gain passions before being transported to a newborn child. Joe must enlist help from the other souls-in-training, like 22, a soul who has spent eons in the You Seminar, in order to get back to Earth.
6) Frozen 2
Elsa the Snow Queen has an extraordinary gift — the power to create ice and snow. But no matter how happy she is to be surrounded by the people of Arendelle, Elsa finds herself strangely unsettled. After hearing a mysterious voice call out to her, Elsa travels to the enchanted forests and dark seas beyond her kingdom — an adventure that soon turns into a journey of self-discovery. Another juggernaut animated film that continues to pull in viewers every day, regardless of parents wishing they’d let it go!
Easily one of my favourite modern animated movies and sees Moana answer the call of the ocean, taking to the seas to save her people from a terrible curse. The movie features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as the Demigod Maui and his character really adds some great comedy moments. Moana delivers an awesome soundtrack including “Your Welcome” and “How Far I’ll Go”. This movie rarely has left the top of the trending charts, showing how popular this film is with kids who must be watching this one on repeat a fair few times a week!
A girl disguises as a male warrior and joins the imperial army in order to prevent her sick father from being forced to enlist as he has no male heir. Mulan’s re-entry into the top 10 films, shows that Disney+ subscribers are still checking out the newer film releases, even a year after it’s release.
Miguel pursues his love for singing in spite of his family’s ban on music. He stumbles into the Land of the Dead, where he learns about his great-great-grandfather who was a legendary singer.
10) Ford Vs Ferrari
Carroll Shelby, an automotive designer, and Ken Miles, a race car driver, join hands to build a trailblazing vehicle and compete against the Ferrari race cars.
