Mickey Mouse is on a mission to make everyone smile, but it hits a snag when he runs into the Wicked Witch trying to deliver poison apples to Snow White in “Once Upon An Apple.” Every day the Wicked Witch is trying to poison Snow White and every day Mickey shows up to put a smile on her face which accidentally leads to her poisoning herself over and over again. Finally, Mickey has replaced Snow White as the fairest of them all and the Wicked Witch turns her attention to Mickey before he finds a way to make her the fairest of them all.
This episode perfectly encapsulates something I’ve been waiting for since this series was announced. While Mickey has his core group of friends, there are so many Disney characters that can be incorporated into a Mickey Mouse story, they need to branch out. In this one short, we see Mickey interact briefly with Mr. Toad, Cinderella, the Cheshire Cat, and Snow White on top of the main storyline with the Wicked Witch. I want to see him interact with more characters from the Walt Disney Animation Studios feature presentations.
I also really loved the concept that the Wicked Witch keeps getting poisoned over and over again. Mickey Mouse is so intent to help the Wicked Witch, he ends up hurting her every time. Of course, he is helping Snow White, even if he doesn’t know it. Then, he somehow manages to avoid every trap the Wicked Witch sets for him. It’s a comedy of errors that made me laugh over and over again. Many were predictable, but they were still hysterical and that’s all this series needs to be.
After some less than stellar shorts in the middle of this run of episodes, the series is hitting a nice stride. I think it’s going to end this run on a high note and it’s making me more excited for more shorts down the line. I love what this has been at its best. I want to see more characters from other facets of Disney and I want to see fewer shorts that are just Mickey and Minnie. Some of them have worked, but some have needed more characters. But, in the end, this has been a fun ride.
