Mickey and Minnie are on a date birdwatching as they try to finish Minnie’s picture book of her favorite birds in the latest short in “The Wonderful World of Mickey Mouse” series. When they spot the bird, Mickey climbs a tree to get that picture but ends up in the bird’s nest, looking very similar to her fresh hatched chicks, so the momma bird thinks Mickey is one of her children. This leads Minnie to do everything she can to save Mickey while he’s still trying to get her that photo.

This is one of the funnier episodes of this series of shorts to only feature Mickey and Minnie. Mickey’s constant attempts to escape coupled with Minnie’s attempts to help him and the bird’s ability to prevent both of them from completing their goals led to some of the biggest laughs I’ve had while watching this series. Minnie’s resilience is on display as she is constantly being captured in the bird’s beak and flown to the water where she’s dropped in. Meanwhile, Mickey is forced to endure some of the harshest treatment from the bird because he’s a mouse and doesn’t require the same nurturing her chicks do. It’s hysterical to see him force-fed worms or have his mouth washed out with soap because the closest sound he can make to the bird is something she finds distasteful. It’s some of the best humor in the series.

While I, genuinely, enjoyed this short, it isn’t perfect. I’m still missing other members of the sensational six in these shorts. I’m sounding like a broken record, but I would love to see more than just Mickey and Minnie in these shorts. During the first 10 shorts, we got some really good episodes featuring Mickey and his friends. But, this round has been almost all Mickey and Minnie. While I think they can make it work with a good balance of Mickey’s friends, they need to do a better job of scheduling. So many in a row with only Mickey and Minnie is wearing thin.

I really enjoyed this short and I’m glad it rebounded after the duet episode that felt really disappointing. This one was fun and it was funny. I liked it. I hope we get more in this vein. I just hope we see more of Mickey’s friends soon, as well.
