Disney has announced it will be releasing the classic 1970s film “The Blue Bird” onto Disney+ on Friday 14th May in the United Kingdom, Ireland, New Zealand, Australia and Canada.

This American-Soviet children’s fantasy film was directed by George Cukor and originally released in 1976.  It stars Elizabeth Taylor, Jane Fonda and Cicely Tyson.

The film is about Mytyl and her brother Tyltyl, who are peasant children and are led on a quest for the Blue Bird of Happiness by the Queen of Light, who gives them a hat with a magic diamond that allows them to call forth the souls of all things, both living and inanimate.

On their journey, they are accompanied by the human personifications of a dog, a cat, water, sugar, bread, milk, and fire. They visit the kingdoms of the past and future and the queendoms of night and luxury, at each place absorbing more wisdom.
