The second season of Star Wars: The Manalorian has only just begun on Disney+, but work on the third season is has been underway for months, as the shows creator Jon Favreau publicly stated he was working on the third season.

Deadline is now reporting that the new season could begin production very soon, with some of their sources saying production is starting up in the next few weeks, while other sources are stating its beginning production in spring 2021.  Production Weekly also has the show listed, with the working title Buccaneer.

The reason for the delay to spring 2021 could possibly be because Disney is starting work on a Mandalorian spin-off series featuring Boba Fett.   So far we’ve only see a few seconds of Temuera Morrison returning as the bounty hunter in the second season of Star Wars: The Mandalorian.

There have been rumours of Disney making a “Star Wars Story” movie based on Boba Fett for years, so this new Disney+ series could be a way of bringing that story to the screens.  Similar to how Disney moved the upcoming Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series from the big screen.

Deadline is also reporting that Sophie Thatcher, who previously starred in When the Street Lights Go On and Chicago Med, is rumoured to be part of either/or both of the Mandalorian and Boba Fett Disney+ shows.

Disney’s Chariman Bob Iger has previously stated that he wanted to see more Mandalorian spin-off shows on Disney+, which would allow “the possibility of infusing (the mothership series) with more characters and taking those characters in their own direction in terms of series.”
