Disney is set to launch its brand new general entertainment brand “Star”, inside the Disney+ app on 23rd February, which will include hundreds of movies and shows from Disney’s mature brands including ABC, FX, 20th Century Studios and Searchlight Pictures.

In the UK, “Star” will launch with over 75 TV series, more than 270 movies and a slate of 4 exclusive Star Originals including “Big Sky”, “Solar Opposites”, “Helstrom” and “Love, Victor”.   Two episodes of these “Star Originals” will be available at launch, with new episodes dropping each Friday.

“Star” will also be launching in 17 countries including Canada, Australia and New Zealand.  Followed by Eastern Europe, Hong Kong, Japan and South Korea later in 2021.

Today, Disney hosted a special press event and reconfirmed the following shows will be coming to Disney+ later this year.  They also confirmed that all new shows created by FX and ABC in the United States will be “Star Originals”.

During this event, I asked if new shows would be coming to Disney+ on Star after they air in the US and we were told it will be done on a case by case basis.  As with the launch titles, 3 shows have already released in the US on Hulu and “Big Sky” will be about a month or so ahead of the release on “Star”, but this should be less in the future.

There will also be lots of new local content created in Europe for Disney+ including 10 titles that were announced yesterday for Europe including “Good Mothers” and “Parallels”.   More Originals are being created in the UK, including dramas, comedies and reality shows.  Though the UK Original lineup wasn’t announced.

“Star Originals” availability can also vary between regions as some shows are available on other platforms due to pre-existing deals.

Here’s a look at the some of the “Star Originals” coming later this year:

Kelly (“Big Little Lies”) presents a series about private detectives Cassie Dewell and Cody Hoyt, who join forces with Cody’s estranged wife and ex-cop, Jenny Hoyt, to search for two sisters who have been kidnapped by a truck driver on a remote highway in Montana. When they discover that these are not the only girls who have disappeared in the area, they must race against the clock to stop the killer before another woman is taken. Based on the series of books by C.J. Box, the series stars Katheryn Winnick, Kylie Bunbury and Ryan Phillippe.

“Love, Victor” is set in the world of the groundbreaking movie, “Love, Simon,” which was inspired by Becky Albertalli’s acclaimed young adult novel, “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda,” about a closeted gay teenager who is forced to come out after being blackmailed. Facing challenges at home, navigating the ups and downs of a new high school and exploring his sexual orientation, Victor reaches out to Simon when things become too difficult.
