To celebrate this years “Earth Day”, Disney+ is getting a brand new documentary series called “Secrets Of The Whales”, which has been created with James Cameron, who is an executive producer on the show and Sigourney Weaver narrates the series.
“Secrets of the Whales,” from National Geographic, plunges viewers deep within the epicentre of whale culture to experience the extraordinary communication skills and intricate social structures of five different whale species: Orcas, Humpbacks, Belugas, Narwhals and Sperm whales. There are four episodes in the series, with each episode focusing on one specific whale species.
James Cameron also makes an appearance at the end of each episode to discuss the incredible footage that is shown in the episode and give details on how some of it was filmed. The series was filmed over three years in 24 locations including New Zealand and in the Arctic.
“Secrets Of The Whales” is easily one of the best Disney+ documentaries we’ve seen so far. It’s incredibly well made and reminds me of the epic feeling of many of the BBC’s big nature shows. This is a beautiful series to watch, the footage is just stunning and I cannot recommend this series enough, especially if you’re interested in whales or nature in general.
This series feels like it’s on a different level to your typical Disney+ Original. It was originally scheduled to be released on the National Geographic channel, but was shifted to Disney+ last year and that is especially good for international fans, since sometimes Nat Geo shows take much longer to arrive on Disney+.
Each episode is around 45 minutes and since they focus on different species, they do feel very different from one another. I’ve been a lover of whales since I was a kid and saw Orcas at Sea World for the first time. Leading me to go whale watching in many amazing locations, so I’ve been lucky enough to see many different whales in the wild including Sperm, Humpback, Pilot and Orcas. So I do feel like I have a deeper love for these amazing creatures and this certainly made this documentary much more enjoyable for me. There are so many incredible scenes within this series, watching Orcas different feeding techniques, Belugas adopting a Narwhal and the love between a Humpback mother and calf.
“Secrets Of The Whales” is an incredible documentary series and certainly one I hope people check out when it arrives on Disney+. It’s great for the whole family to sit down together and just connect with the natural world.
Rating 4.5 Out Of 5.
All four episodes will arrive on Disney+ on Thursday 22nd April.
